When they found Molly, she was tied up hand and foot, her mouth gagged, locked away in her cramped little room. The second she saw someone come in, she started struggling and crying out, her eyes already raw and red from all the tears.
The moment they set her free, she blurted out, frantic, “Now! My dad is helping Mrs. Salisbury escape! You have to stop him!”
People glanced at each other, and no one hesitated. They hurried Molly out to the garden. As soon as she saw the thick smoke and the flames still flickering from the attic, her face went pale.
When they rushed her in front of Daniel, she didn’t even wait to be asked. Her knees buckled and she dropped to the ground, spilling everything at once.
“Madam, sir, it was my dad, I know it was him… This is all my fault. Really, it’s all my fault.”
Grandma Grace banged her hands on the armrests of her wheelchair, her voice sharp with anger. “How could this possibly be your fault? Speak up, now!”
Molly wiped her tears away, her hands trembling. “It started with Miss Bianca… Miss Bianca never actually went abroad. A couple of days ago, she called me and told me to take something to her at a hotel. When I got there, she was already drunk. She made me swear not to tell anyone she was still here. She said if I told the family, she’d make sure I couldn’t stay in school. I really just wanted to finish my studies, and I thought she just didn’t want to leave the country, so I kept quiet.”
“But this morning, she left the hotel and went straight to the Linscott house. She told me to call her at five. If she didn’t answer, I was supposed to call the police and tell them to go to the Linscotts.”
By now, both Grandma Grace and Daniel were staring at Molly in shock. Bianca was involved? She never even left the country? And she’d gone to the Linscott’s place?
Grandma Grace could barely process it. “Why would she go to the Linscotts? Wasn’t she supposed to be on a plane? How did she end up in a hotel?”
Daniel’s voice was tight. “She must have slipped away before the flight. Bianca… I can’t believe she’d do something like this. As for the Linscotts, I heard they’re having some kind of secret ceremony today. No guests or anything. Not many people even know about it.”
“Because Miss Bianca told me to make that call, I was anxious all day. I just felt like something bad was going to happen. My dad noticed I was acting strange and pressed me for answers. I was about to come clean and tell both of you, Madam and Sir, because I was so scared. But when Dad realized it was about Miss Bianca, he locked me in my room right away. He whipped me with his belt. I couldn’t stand it, so I finally confessed. I told him Bianca never left the country.”
“It was five at that exact moment. Dad was watching me, so I had to call Miss Bianca like she told me. No one picked up. I knew something had happened to her. I begged my dad to go to you, to call the police, but he said this was his chance to show Mrs. Salisbury he was loyal. He wanted to tell her first. I begged him not to do anything stupid. It was too serious. But he just tied me up. I was locked in my room, and I could hear him outside, talking on the phone, saying he’d help Mrs. Salisbury escape and take her to the Linscotts. It’s all my fault. I should’ve told you from the start.”
Molly was sobbing so hard she could barely breathe. To prove she was telling the truth, she pulled up her sleeves, showing the red, angry welts all over her arms.
Seeing this, and hearing everything Molly had said, Grandma Grace was furious.
“Unbelievable! Has Alona completely lost her mind?”
