“Don’t you dare touch him!” Daniel’s voice thundered through the room, raw and furious.
He glared at his mother. “Do you even know what your precious grandson has done? Yesterday, Kellen pulled some dramatic stunt, pretending to jump off a building. And of course, someone caught it all on video.”
Daniel’s jaw clenched. “I still can’t figure out why the videos haven’t blown up online, but people have already started sending them to me. They’re warning me to get my son under control, or he’ll ruin everything we’ve built at Salisbury Corporation.”
“And that’s not even the worst of it. Last night, he went to some ridiculous party—”
“I know,” Grandma Grace cut in. Her voice was calm, but tired. “I know everything.”
Daniel stared, speechless. “So, it was you? You covered for him?”
She nodded, looking weary. “What choice did I have? Should I just let our family fall apart? Let Wiona find out about all of this?”
She sighed. “Jace took Wiona to the gala last night, didn’t he? They’re finally starting to get along. I couldn’t just watch another mess get between them.”
“And Jace just couldn’t bear to stand by and watch Kellen die. As long as he explains things to Kellen afterward, it’s not such a big deal. If it takes some money to smooth things over, so be it.”
Daniel pressed his fingers to his temples. His head throbbed, but something in her words snagged his attention. “Wait. Wiona? You mean Wiona was with him last night?”
“Yes,” Grandma Grace replied. “Someone called and told me they saw Jace and his wife at the gala.” She turned to Jace. “Jace, why didn’t Wiona come home with you?”
Jace looked lost, his face pale and drawn. He shook his head. “Grandma, I wasn’t with Wiona.”
He glanced around, panic starting to rise. “What happened to Wiona? She’s not at home?”
Grandma Grace’s eyes widened. “What? If you weren’t with her, then who were you with?”
Jace dropped his gaze, shame creeping over his features. “Last night was a masquerade.”
The realization hit Grandma Grace. “Kellen. It was her again, wasn’t it?”
She shook her head, disappointment sharp in her voice. “You’ve lost your mind. Do you know Wiona is missing? Your mother set fire to the attic yesterday. She nearly burned down the whole house, then ran off and caused a scene at the Linscotts’.”
She didn’t stop. “Your sister split open Darian’s head. Did you know any of that? While all this chaos was happening, you were running around with that bitch at a party. You even got into a fight and used the Salisbury name.”
Daniel stared back, stunned by the anger in Jace’s voice. Only now did he realize the damage his past had left behind.
Grandma Grace couldn’t take any more, so Daniel swallowed his pride and held back.
Dr. Monroe soon arrived and checked her over, then gave the news they’d all been dreading. Grandma Grace’s health was failing fast.
“She might have had three to six months left,” Dr. Monroe said quietly, “but the recent stress has been too much. She may not even have three months now. You need to keep her happy. Don’t let her worry about family drama. That’s the only way she’ll have a little more time and peace.”
He left to prepare her medicine, shaking his head.
Daniel stared at his mother, lying pale and still. He backed out of the room, step by step, as if trying to escape the truth. At the door, he turned and fixed Jace with a cold, unreadable stare.
“You and your mother left me no choice,” he said, the words landing like a threat.
Jace felt a chill run down his spine. He hurried after his father. “Dad!”
But Daniel didn’t look back. He pulled out his phone as he walked away. “Get Isaac on a flight home. The Salisburys need more than one heir.”
