“Her body can’t handle this… It might kill her.”
Jean’s voice broke as she cried. Before she could say more, someone from the Salisbury family hurried in.
“Jean?”
A young man, looking a lot like Jace, fixed his eyes on Wiona. There was a hint of a smile in his gaze.
“You must be my sister-in-law, right?”
Wiona recognized him instantly. Isaac. Daniel’s illegitimate son. He must have been at the hospital already since he got here so fast.
She shook her head. “No, I’m not part of the Salisbury family anymore.”
She nodded at him. “You’re here now. I’ll let you handle it.”
Without waiting for a reply, Wiona turned and walked away. Isaac kept watching her until she disappeared, his smile slowly fading.
“Jean, please relax. I already called the police. They’ll be here any minute.”
How could Jean relax? Her hands shook as she tried to call someone else.
“Who could have done this?”
“It’s nothing but bad luck for the Salisburys lately. One disaster after another. What are we supposed to do?”
“Mr. Salisbury, has your dad woken up yet?”
“If he was here, he’d figure this out in no time.”
Isaac shook his head. “He’s awake, but he needs heart surgery. I can’t tell him about Grandma right now.”
He turned to Jean, his voice steady. “Trust me. I’ll find her.”
The look in Isaac’s eyes calmed Jean just a little. Maybe he was young, but maybe he could handle this.
On her way home, Wiona couldn’t stop thinking about who might have taken Grandma Grace. She had her suspicions almost immediately.
Could it have been Alona? Or Jace?
They had always wanted whatever it was Grandma Grace had. But after the news about Bianca came out, Alona’s relationship with Grandma Grace and Daniel was completely destroyed. That made it even harder for them to get what they wanted. Plus, Grandma Grace was getting so frail, she could barely hold on.
Maybe Alona did something out of desperation.
Wiona pulled out her phone and called Mason.
“Can you check where Alona and Bianca went after they left the hospital?”
“Sure. By the way, boss, about Molly… is she not coming back to the café?”
“She’s busy with school and going to the nursing home. She won’t be back for a while.”
“Are you worried about her?”
Mason sounded flustered. “I just… she’s so young. I’m afraid something might happen. After what happened to her dad, what if those people come after her too?”
Wiona picked up on the worry in his voice, but she didn’t say anything about it.
Or me… are you going to let go of me too?
He didn’t say the last part out loud, but it was written all over his face. For a second, Wiona almost forgot that things had changed between them. It was like he was still that big brother who always knew how to get to her.
But that was all in the past.
“You were the ones who pushed me away first.”
She remembered how much it hurt. It almost felt pointless to think about now.
She didn’t know how Kyle had found her, but it didn’t matter. They had nothing to do with each other anymore. He was the one who said he wasn’t good enough in the first place.
She started for the door, but Kyle called after her.
“Madison’s been locked up.”
“If you still feel even a little sorry for her, you should go see her.”
Why would Madison be locked up?
Wiona didn’t turn around. Kyle’s voice carried on behind her.
“She’s gone on a hunger strike. Three days without food.”
“If you want, come to the Morgan house and talk to her. I know you two have been talking in secret. You get along pretty well.”
“Wiona, Madison’s carrying some deep pain. Nobody really knows what she’s been through. If she’d grown up with us, she’d be different now. Are you really not going to do anything about it?”
