Madison shot forward, trying to block the police with both arms out. “Wait, this can’t be right. Officers, there’s got to be some mistake. My sister would never get involved in something like kidnapping.”
The officer didn’t budge. “We’re just following procedure. Please step aside.”
Wiona, on the other hand, looked completely calm. She glanced at Madison, eyes steady, and said softly, “The password is our birthday.” Without another word, she let the police lead her away.
Madison’s heart hammered as she watched her sister disappear down the hallway. She had no idea what was going on, and that one cryptic sentence was all Wiona had left her. The rest, she’d have to figure out on her own.
She started pacing, barely able to breathe. What password? What did Wiona mean? She racked her brain for a clue. Then, as she moved, her hand brushed against her shoulder. Suddenly, she remembered—Wiona’s bag was still slung over her own shoulder. She’d offered to carry it after dinner as a thank you, and Wiona had let her.
Wait. Was this what Wiona wanted?
Madison’s hands started to tremble as she dug through the bag. It didn’t take long to find Wiona’s phone tucked inside. If Wiona had been carrying the bag, the police would’ve taken it for evidence. So she’d left it on purpose. She must have realized the bag was with Madison, but couldn’t say more in front of the police. The password… could it be the phone’s lock code?
Heart in her throat, Madison typed in their shared birthday. The screen unlocked instantly.
That was it. Wiona wanted her to use the phone to get help. A lawyer, that’s what she needed most right now. But Madison froze. She had no connections. She’d left the Morgan family tonight with nothing but herself. She didn’t even have money for a lawyer, let alone know who to call.
After a long pause, she swallowed her pride and called the only person she could think of.
The phone barely rang once before a furious voice exploded on the other end. “Wiona? You finally let me out of the dark? Where did you take Madison? Are you crazy? You really think you can hide her somewhere the Morgan family can’t reach? Or do you think if Madison disappears, you’ll get to crawl back into the family—”
Madison cut him off. “It’s me, Madison. Wiona’s in trouble.”
After hanging up, Madison just stood there, numb. She let out a shaky sigh. “You say you want her back, but all you do is hurt her. Or maybe you just see her the same way you see me—as some bargaining chip for the Morgan family.”
Inside, Wiona had been left sitting in a freezing metal chair in the interrogation room for what felt like forever. No one had come in. She was handcuffed to the seat, alone in the dim light, unable to tell how much time had passed. Her back ached, her legs were numb, and the discomfort in her stomach was getting harder to ignore.
Just as she thought she couldn’t take it anymore, the door banged open. Someone finally walked in.
“Talk. Why did you kidnap Mrs. Salisbury?”
Wiona almost laughed. “Officer, do you have any real evidence, or have you already decided I’m guilty? I didn’t kidnap Mrs. Grace. I thought I was here to help with the investigation, but if you’re going to treat me like a criminal, you need to give me some facts.”
The officer frowned, his face hard as stone. He slammed his palm on the table. “A Salisbury family member has personally accused you. That’s all we need. At the time of the incident, you distracted Mrs. Salisbury’s caretaker, drawing her away and giving your accomplice the chance to act. Confess now. If you don’t, you’ll be sitting here all night.”
A Salisbury family member accused her? Who—Jace or Isaac? They were the only ones running things now. Wiona wouldn’t have been surprised if they were watching her right now from behind the glass, monitoring her every move.
