Wiona went to see Cassian. Days had gone by, but he still hadn’t shown any sign of waking up. Summer happened to be at the hospital too, so they stepped outside for a walk in the garden.
“The doctor said if Dad doesn’t wake up soon… there’s a chance he could become… well, a vegetable,” Summer said, voice trembling. “But I just know he’s not going to give up like that. Don’t you think so?” She tried to hold it together, but then she broke down and collapsed into Wiona’s arms, crying hard.
Wiona held her for a long time, gently rubbing her back, letting Summer cry it out. When Summer finally pulled herself together, she wiped her eyes and managed a shaky smile. “Sorry. I’ve just been so tense lately. The divorce, work, and now Dad… I feel like I can’t relax for a second. It’s exhausting. I didn’t mean to lose it in front of you. Did I scare you?”
Wiona shook her head. “Summer, honestly, I’m honored you trust me enough to lean on me. I just hope I can make things even a little easier for you. Besides, Cassian means a lot to me too. I should be helping. From now on, let me handle things here. I’ll have someone come every day to check on him. You can visit when you have time, but even if you’re busy, someone will keep you updated. Sound good?”
Wiona hesitated, then added, “You mentioned your divorce. Isn’t your husband from Easton Heights?”
Summer’s husband and Jace were cut from the same cloth, both obsessed with girls from their past. When Summer found out she was just a stand-in, she filed for divorce and took their child. Now, with her dad in the hospital, she was barely holding it together.
As they talked, Wiona’s phone buzzed. It was Florian. She stepped aside to answer. “Did you hear something about your mom already?”
“No, Ms. Morgan, it’s about the other thing. I think it worked.”
Wiona arched an eyebrow. “Already?”
She’d recently given Florian a job: find a way to mess with Kellen so she’d start having some unusual symptoms. Was it really happening this fast?
Wiona shook her head. “That wasn’t really me. It was mostly luck. I was just trying to save myself.”
She thought about the key, wondering if maybe only Jean understood what it really meant. She wanted to figure it out, so she didn’t turn Florian down. “I’ll see what I can do.”
As soon as she hung up, Summer got a call too. Something urgent came up, so she had to leave. They said a quick goodbye, promising to catch up again soon.
Wiona took her box and headed back to Hawthorne Hall. That night, she got a call from Molly, her voice tight with worry. Something had happened at the Salisbury house. Grandma Grace’s little villa had been robbed. One whole wall of her bedroom had been blown open. The safe was battered but still locked. The thieves had trashed half the garden before the police and the Salisbury guards caught up to them as they tried to escape. There was a wild chase, and two of the thieves were shot and killed right there. But Sam got away.
The next day, a woman’s body was found floating in the river on the outskirts of Stonehill.
