The three of them were arguing about something, and it was getting heated. The middle-aged woman with messy hair looked like she was about to fall apart. Alona stood off to the side, holding her babies, cold and silent. Sam just looked annoyed, his face dark with impatience.
All of a sudden, someone slipped a pair of headphones over Wiona’s ears. She looked up and saw Conrad pulling his hand back. He tapped one ear, and right away, Wiona caught the voices coming from the other side of the house.
“Sam, you’ve ruined everything. What more do you want?” The woman’s voice was sharp and clear.
Wait, was this a wiretap? That meant Conrad had known where Sam was all along. No wonder he’d planned everything so perfectly, with surveillance and audio feeds, making sure nothing slipped through his fingers. Sam didn’t stand a chance. But where was Jean? Wiona swept the house’s other windows with her binoculars, but Jean was nowhere in sight.
It was like Conrad could read her mind. “Relax,” he said quietly. “I know your people are looking for him, too. I’ve already tipped off Mason and the police about this place. They’ll be here in about thirty minutes. That’s plenty of time for you to get what you need.”
Wiona’s heart skipped. He did all of this… for her? The thought barely had time to settle before Sam’s voice cut through the headphones.
“Enough! What are you all yelling for? I’m wanted all over the city. We’re stuck here. My uncle is sending people tonight to help us get to Southeast Asia. This is our last shot. Once things cool down, we’ll come back and get our son. This is it. Are you coming or not?”
“I’m not going!” the woman shouted, her voice cracking. “Sam, we had a good life, a good business, and you threw it all away for her! You don’t even blame her. You just protect her. Why would I go with you? So I can watch you both flaunt your relationship in front of me?”
Alona had been standing there stiff and silent, but now she’d had enough. She slapped the woman hard. “Shut up! What are you even saying? Say one more word and I’ll tear your mouth right off!”
So this was Sam’s wife. But when she got slapped, Sam only watched, ice-cold, making no move to help.
Sam’s eyes went cold. He crouched down and grabbed her by the collar. “You want to stay? The only way you’re staying is if you’re dead. You know too much about me. Even if you’re my wife, I can’t let you go.”
He tightened his grip around her throat. Alona gasped, completely shocked by how ruthless Sam could be, even with his own wife. She backed away, panic in her eyes, until she bumped into two men blocking her escape.
“Mrs. Salisbury, where are you going?” one of Conrad’s men said, quiet but firm.
Conrad’s team had surrounded the house so quietly that nobody noticed. The last of Sam’s men were already on the ground, pinned and helpless.
Conrad gently took the headphones off Wiona and leaned in close, his voice soft in her ear. “Now’s your chance. Take your revenge.”
