Also, this was supposed to be the Salisbury family’s last real shot at turning things around.
“I don’t get what Grandma Grace wants,” Wiona said, sliding the two documents right back across the table. “No matter what, I can’t accept this.”
Jean’s eyes went wide. She jumped out of her seat, her voice tight with nerves. “Ms. Morgan, do you realize what this means? Do you know how many people would do anything for what’s in those papers? Grandma Grace didn’t leave this to her own son or to Jace. She left it all to you. That’s how much she loved and trusted you. How could you just turn it down?”
Wiona stayed calm. “Exactly. She didn’t give any of this to her own son or her grandson, but to me, her ex-granddaughter-in-law. That’s exactly why I can’t take it. Jace and I are divorced. I’d rather keep things clean and walk away from the Salisbury family for good.”
Her answer rattled Jean. She tried again, desperate. “Can’t you at least accept it as something Grandma Grace wanted to leave for your twins?”
Wiona didn’t say a word. She just stared at Jean, letting the silence stretch between them.
Jean started to panic. She felt like Wiona could see right through her, and that only made her more frustrated. The task Grandma Grace had given her was already slipping out of her hands. Her voice got sharper. “Don’t throw this back in my face. After everything Grandma Grace did for you, how could you be so heartless?”
Jean had spent years as Grandma Grace’s right hand, but now she was completely out of her depth. She’d felt so sure of herself before she came, and now her confidence was gone. This was the last thing Grandma Grace had asked her to do. If she couldn’t pull it off, how would she ever live it down?
Wiona finally spoke, her voice steady. “You don’t get to guilt-trip me. I’ve fallen for that before. That’s why it took me so long to finally get my divorce papers. If it hadn’t been for Grandma Grace using her illness as an excuse, I would have left a long time ago. She’s gone now, and I won’t fall for the same trick twice.”
She looked Jean in the eye. “And you shouldn’t be saying any of this to me. If it wasn’t for me, you’d still be stuck with Sam and Alona.”
Jean watched her son fall apart and finally gave in. She slumped back into her chair, all her fight gone. “So you already figured it out.”
Florian blinked, confused. “Figured what out? What are you two even talking about?”
Wiona’s voice was cold. “She already tricked me once, and I only just got free today. Why would I trust her again? I know exactly what kind of person she is. She’s always put the Salisbury family first. There’s no way she’d give me all this for nothing. So what did she want in return?”
Jean’s face was grim. “Grandma Grace left you all her shares in Salisbury Bank and the Sims Foundation. The only condition is that you must remarry Jace. Within three months. But I bet she never imagined you’d walk away from everything she left you without a second thought.”
