Now things were looking up. Ms. Morgan had moved in, and it was the same Ms. Morgan Annette had liked from the very start. So what if she’d been married before? As long as Conrad was happy with her, Annette wouldn’t have cared if this was her third or even fourth marriage. If anyone was gonna gossip, well, the Salisbury family could just vanish from the face of the earth, and nobody would ever remember who her first husband was.
Annette sipped her tea, completely content, when Donna, looking anxious, hurried back in after seeing Conrad leave.
“Ma’am, please, whatever Conrad said, don’t let it upset you. Don’t let this Ms. Morgan get in the way of the relationship between you and your son. Conrad is just too soft-hearted. So what if Ms. Morgan is pregnant with his children? There are plenty of women who could carry Conrad’s child. Does she think she can win just because of that? I know you’ll handle this, but please be careful. We can’t have another argument about Ms. Morgan…”
Annette cut her off, her patience running thin.
“Who said Conrad and I are fighting? Donna, you’ve been in this house a long time. You watched Conrad grow up. You know his personality better than anyone. If he felt nothing for the girl, do you really think he’d let her get close? He’d rather argue with me than be with someone he doesn’t want. Now that someone he actually likes has shown up, I’m thrilled. Why would I go against him? And if Ms. Morgan was really as terrible as you say, don’t you think Conrad would see it? Would he really keep someone like that around? You need to stop stirring up trouble just because you’re bored. Don’t ruin the bond you have with Conrad. That’s enough. I’m going to pretend I never heard any of this. But from now on, I don’t want to hear a single bad word about Ms. Morgan. If I catch you stepping out of line again, you’ll be living in a retirement home. Do you understand?”
With that, Annette stood up gracefully and left the dining room.
“Phil, get my bedroom ready. I’m moving back in today. And from now on, I want you to pay even more attention to Ms. Morgan than you do to me or to your master. Got it?”
As Annette’s footsteps faded away, Donna finally collapsed onto the floor, her face as pale as paper.
She just couldn’t wrap her head around it. Wasn’t Madam supposed to deal with Wiona when she came back? Wiona got pregnant with Conrad’s child while married to someone else. Didn’t Annette care about the family’s reputation anymore? Had everyone lost their minds?
And now they wanted to send her to a retirement home? She’d spent most of her life with the Sullivan family. Why should she be the one to leave? Hawthorne Hall was her home. She’d die before she let anyone drive her out.
Donna clenched her fists, her nails digging into her palms, her face twisted with anger.
“Wiona, this is all your fault… Fine. So now everyone’s under your spell? You little bitch. Just wait until he comes back. How much longer can you act like you own the place? The Sullivan family’s reputation will not be ruined by a divorced woman like you. Just wait and see.”
Meanwhile, after her meal settled, Wiona got ready to head out. She’d planned to meet Madison, and they were going to the orphanage together, so she went upstairs to freshen up and then asked Phil to arrange a car.
