Wiona and Madison glanced around, but nothing seemed off to them.
Madison nudged Wiona and grinned. “Aren’t you being a little too anxious? Relax, it’s just a meal. With you here, nothing’s going to happen.”
Peter didn’t share her confidence. He stayed on high alert throughout dinner, his eyes constantly moving, tracking every little noise and movement.
When Wiona needed the bathroom, Peter insisted Madison go with her. The two of them walked Wiona right to the restroom door, and Peter wouldn’t relax until Madison promised to stand guard outside.
Madison thought he was going way overboard, but she kept a close eye on Wiona anyway.
Thankfully, dinner ended without any drama.
Afterward, Madison announced she was heading back to the Morgan family.
“There are things I need to say to them,” she explained.
It was clear she still had hope for her family. After spending twenty-two years as an orphan, she couldn’t just give up on them now that she finally had family again.
Wiona hesitated, then offered gentle advice. “If things don’t work out, just give yourself an escape route, okay? It’s always important to have a way out.”
“And if anything goes wrong, you call me. No matter what.”
They said their goodbyes.
The Sullivan family’s car was already waiting at the curb. Wiona and Peter got in, and it whisked them away.
On the drive, Wiona’s phone buzzed. Madison had texted, [Wiona, can you find out if something happened to Peter? He seems off—like he’s got something heavy on his mind. He’s not the cheerful big brother I remember.]
Wiona wasn’t surprised Madison noticed. She was always sharp like that.
Just as Wiona reached the Sullivan estate, another message popped up from Madison. [Wiona, Peter’s instincts were spot-on at dinner. My brother just cornered me at my room and demanded to know who I’d been eating with!]
[Is he crazy? He actually tracked us. If Peter hadn’t been there, who knows what would’ve happened. Maybe you’d be gone again!]
A chill ran down Wiona’s back. She couldn’t shake the fear.
She quickly texted, [Are you safe? Do you need to get out?]
Madison replied, [He’s watching me constantly now. When he realized I wanted to leave, he locked me in my room and even sealed the windows. There’s no reasoning with them at this point.]
[I want to get out.]
