Conrad picked up the hairdryer and started drying her hair himself.
Wiona was caught off guard by how skilled and gentle he was. His fingers moved through her hair with a care that felt almost practiced. This couldn’t be his first time doing this for a girl, could it?
Before she could say anything, Conrad seemed to read her mind. He kept his face neutral. “Alice wasn’t scared of me when she was little. Whenever I had time, I’d dry her hair for her.”
“So, stop overthinking it.”
Wiona blinked. “Oh.” Well, he’d just answered the question she was too embarrassed to ask out loud.
She let out a little sigh. “You’re a really good brother.”
Her thoughts drifted to Kyle. He was her brother, too, but things had always been different with him. Kyle had controlled every part of her life, treating her like a doll he’d raised from the start. If she hadn’t found a way to rebel and pour her teenage frustration into her art, maybe she really would have turned into another Jasmine.
The idea made her shiver. Living her whole life according to what her husband, brother, or father wanted? She would have been swallowed up long ago. She wouldn’t even have the friendship she’d found with Madison.
Lost in these thoughts, Wiona rested her chin on her hand and slowly let her eyes close.
When Conrad switched off the hairdryer, she was already asleep.
He tapped her nose. “Not worried I’ll eat you up now?”
Then he scooped her into his arms and tucked her gently into bed.
When he came back from his shower, Wiona had curled up on her side, her belly round and soft. She looked especially adorable like that.
Conrad slid in behind her and wrapped his arms around her, careful and protective.
Wiona had never slept this close to anyone before. She woke up the second he touched her.
“Ah.” The small sound slipped out before she could stop it.
Conrad only held her tighter. “It’s okay. I’m not going to do anything.”
Now she was wide awake, her body stiff with nerves. “R-really?”
He let out a low hum. “Yeah.”
“You don’t believe me?”
“I actually asked Jason about it,” he said quietly. “He told me it’s fine to be close during the second trimester.”
“But you’re carrying two babies.”
“Get some sleep,” he said softly. “I’ll read some files for a bit.”
He used work as an excuse to keep his distance. Wiona peeked out from under the covers and mumbled, “Well... You should sleep soon too.”
Then she buried her head completely under the blanket.
She fell asleep not long after.
In the middle of the night, she vaguely felt someone pull her close, but she was too tired to care. After a moment of half-awake confusion, she drifted even deeper into sleep.
The next morning, Wiona woke up early.
Conrad was still sleeping next to her. She couldn’t help staring at him, taking in his face, the lines of his eyebrows, the shape of his features. Every smile, every frown, the way he looked down — it all replayed in her mind.
She really liked him. Maybe more than anyone she’d ever liked before.
Just thinking about it made her smile.
“What’s making you so happy? Wanna share it with me?” Conrad’s sleepy eyes opened, and he looked right at her.
