“This is a big deal. She’s already been through one failed marriage, and I know her—she wouldn’t just jump into another one so easily. Conrad, did you pressure her? With all your power and influence, did you somehow push her into marrying you? Wiona, just tell me, did he do something to you? You’d never make a decision like this if something wasn’t wrong…”
“Stop.” Wiona’s voice cut through the room, steady and sharp. She looked right at Kyle, her eyes so clear it made him uneasy. He realized what she was saying, but he wasn’t ready to accept it.
Wiona went on, “I know exactly what I’m doing. I’m not confused. I’m thinking straight. Besides, he’s the father of my kids. Isn’t it only natural that we get married? Kyle, if you want to talk about what really matters, Madison and I can have that conversation with you tonight. But if you’re just going to act like you always do, then there’s no point.”
Kyle felt a wave of bitterness rise in his throat. He turned away, quickly wiped at his mouth, then clenched his fists and swallowed hard. He refused to let anyone see his weakness. A rough, quiet laugh escaped him, heavy with frustration, but he covered it up right away. When he turned back, his expression was as cold and distant as ever, like nothing had happened.
“So you found out about Jewel,” he said.
Madison glared at him. “You did know about her all along! You knew what happened between her and Dad?”
Kyle never expected them to piece everything together. That secret had nearly broken him. Even now, he tried to keep up appearances, pretending not to know, refusing to bring all that ugliness into the open. He couldn’t stand to admit that the father he’d always looked up to—the man who taught him, who held his hand and patiently showed him how to write, the father he’d always thought was perfect—had betrayed them all. And now, with just a few words, his sisters had exposed everything.
For a second, Kyle actually felt lighter, almost relieved. He didn’t deny it. Instead, he gave Madison a sad, crooked smile. “Mom still doesn’t know. When the truth about your real family came out, she kept asking about the nurse, she wanted answers, she wanted things set right. But what I found was even worse than she could imagine. So I told her the nurse had been missing for years, that no one knew if she was alive or dead. Dad never brought it up, and neither did I. We both just… let it go, without saying anything.”
Wiona’s voice was calm. “And then you left. You went overseas to run away from it all.”
Kyle stared back at her. “What did you say?”
Madison didn’t flinch. After everything she’d been through, she could finally look him in the eye. “I said, you’re just as weak and selfish as Dad. Maybe even worse. You knew Wiona was innocent, you knew she was just as much a victim of Dad’s affair as the rest of us. But when the truth came out, you hurt her more than anyone. Now you want to come back, fix things, and control her again? You really think that’s possible? Stop lying to yourself. Wiona and I are real people. We’re not just puppets for you and Dad to control, like you do with Mom.”
Kyle tried to defend himself. “It’s not like that. I can explain everything to her. I’m not like Dad—”
Madison cut him off. “How long are you going to keep lying to yourself? The minute you found out the truth and chose to hide it from Mom, you took Dad’s side. You became his partner in all of this. Poor Mom. She’s been fooled by both of you her whole life and doesn’t even know. She thinks her husband loves her, that her son respects her. But what’s really true?”
