Jace had hired Remy for one thing only, and all Remy knew was that Mrs. Salisbury was pregnant. Nothing else. If she knew more, she would have started asking questions eventually. Sooner or later, suspicion would fall on her.
Wiona felt uneasy when Remy suddenly asked to meet. Still, she decided to go. Maybe she’d find out just how much she actually knew about her pregnancy.
Twenty more minutes slipped by. Jace, who had agreed to meet her days ago, was still missing in action.
Wiona sent him a message. “I’ll wait ten more minutes. If you’re not here by then, I’m going in on my own.”
Ten minutes passed. No Jace, no reply, nothing. She’d gotten used to it, but it still stung every time he let her down. She was always the one left waiting. Whether it was at the Salisbury estate, the Morgan house before things fell apart, or any other event they were supposed to attend together, he always left her hanging. She used to convince herself he was just busy with work. She’d get disappointed, sure, but she never let herself really get upset. Now she realized he was doing it on purpose, that he was never interested in making her happy. Looking back, she felt foolish for ever believing otherwise.
She went into the gallery and, without hesitation, blocked his number.
As soon as she stepped inside, she heard someone behind her. “Hey? Here for the art show? By yourself?”
It was Neil, Jace’s so-called best friend, with a stunning date on his arm. Last time Wiona had overheard the truth about her pregnancy at the Salisbury offices, Neil had been there too. He was notorious for his wild lifestyle. Wiona had only met him a handful of times.
She just nodded politely and tried to move away. Neil watched her go, his gaze lingering a little too long.
His date noticed right away. “The way you’re looking at her says something else. Seriously, Neil, who is she?”
Neil didn’t even hesitate. He reached out and squeezed her neck, his tone low and cold. “You’d better not ask questions that don’t concern you. Get smart, or you’ll end up thrown out of Stonehill like a stray. Now leave.”
Every trace of last night’s passion was gone from his face. The woman stumbled out, but not before sending a furious glare in Wiona’s direction.
This was just like him. The whole internet had just finished buzzing about his old romance with Kellen, and now he was out with her again like nothing happened. Clearly, nothing could get between them.
Wiona’s anger was about being stood up, but to Jace and Kellen, it probably looked like jealousy.
Kellen quickly let go of Jace’s arm, her voice full of fake alarm. “Mrs. Salisbury, please don’t get the wrong idea. I’m just here to help Mr. Salisbury meet Nicholas. It’s all business, I promise.”
Jace looked surprised to see Wiona. “Wiona, what are you doing here?” Then it hit him. His grandmother had given them tickets and he was supposed to meet her here. He’d totally forgotten.
He’d gotten two extra tickets, then Kellen begged to come so she could meet the famous artist. It was a perfect business opportunity, too. One of Salisbury Corporation’s games was about to celebrate its third anniversary. If he could get a big-name artist to draw some characters for the event, it would be huge. The company’s stock would skyrocket. So he’d agreed to bring Kellen—and completely forgot about Wiona.
He looked awkward for a split second, but the moment he noticed Neil, that feeling disappeared. “What are you two doing together?”
