Annette couldn’t hold back a gasp. “Sophie!”
A member of the Simpson family rushed forward, helping Sophie up and checking her pulse. “She fainted from being too upset,” he said, then quickly carried her inside.
Conrad barely glanced at Sophie. He wasn’t worried about her at all. Instead, he watched his mother, waiting to see what she would do next.
Just as he expected, Annette glanced at both Wiona and Conrad before saying, “I’ll go check on her.”
Before Wiona could say a word, Conrad let out a cold, bitter laugh. “Of course. It’s always the same.”
He had known this would happen. No matter what, she always chose someone else. Always.
Without another word, Conrad turned away from his mother. He took Wiona’s hand and walked out of the courtyard, eager to leave this place behind.
Wiona looked over her shoulder at Annette and noticed the sadness and loneliness written all over her face.
Annette watched her son walk away, his back rigid and cold, and she let out a helpless sigh. She knew nothing she said would make a difference now. But she still needed to see Sophie. There were things she hadn’t said, things she still needed to do.
