Alice skipped over and crouched in front of her. Wiona pulled out a handkerchief and gently wiped the sweat from Alice's forehead and nose, brushing away some stray snow from her coat.

"You're getting smarter every single day, Alice," Wiona said. "If your brother heard you say these things, he'd be so happy."

Alice cupped her hands under her chin, her eyes sparkling with hope. "Really?"

"I know he loves me the most," she said. "He works so hard."
