Conrad never bothered trying to compete for his mother’s affection. He was too proud for that. But Alice needed it. And every time Annette’s attitude shifted, Wiona could see Conrad react, even if he tried to hide it. He might never admit it out loud, but deep down, he longed for his mother’s love just as much as Alice did. The difference was, Conrad had been let down too many times. He’d learned not to expect anything, which was why he could so easily accept it when Annette pulled away or favored Sophie again. He just… let it go.
Wiona saw all of it. She noticed the tiny, fleeting moments when Annette showed that she did care about the Sullivan siblings. That was enough to give Wiona hope. If she could find the right moment, if she could help create more time for the three of them to be together, maybe Annette would come around. Maybe Annette would finally realize that Alice and Conrad were the family who truly needed her.
Once Wiona made up her mind, her attitude shifted. She realized she shouldn’t have let her own feelings take over yesterday. All she’d done was push Annette further away, and that wasn’t what she wanted. She took a breath, determined to do better, and turned to Annette.
“Mom, I shouldn’t have said what I did yesterday. I’m sorry.” Her voice was steady, honest. “I should have tried to understand how you’re feeling, and where you’re coming from. I’ll seriously think about what to do with Ms. Clements.”
Annette looked at her in surprise, her eyes wide. “You… you really mean that?”
Wiona smiled, nodding. “Of course. But… I do have one condition.”
