Libby pressed a hand to her chest, struggling to catch her breath. For a long moment, she just sat there, shaking, until finally the tears started slipping down her cheeks, falling to the floor one by one. Then the sobs came, raw and loud. “Mom...” Her voice cracked, breaking the silence.
She cried until her eyes were swollen and sore, until the pain in her chest dulled just enough for him to think straight again. She slumped to the ground, pulled out her phone, and scrolled until Conrad’s name appeared. She hit call.
“Sir, I’m sorry. I messed up... It was my fault.”
That night, Libby packed her things, ready to leave. Before she went, she stopped by to see Alice.
“Alice, I have to go,” she said quietly.
Alice’s face lit up when she saw her. She bounced over, all energy and innocence. “Libby, where are you going?”
She tried to give her a reassuring smile, brushing a hand over her head. Except for her red eyes, she looked just like always, calm and put together.
“I’m heading back to work. You need to get better soon. I’ll come visit you, I promise.” Her tone softened. “Alice, I’m sorry about today. I used you, and you almost got hurt. I... I’m not a good person. But I never wanted you to get hurt.”
Alice threw her arms around her, hugging him tight. “You promised, Libby. You have to come see me again. I’ll miss you.”
Her eyes glistened. Then, on tiptoe, she leaned up and pressed a quick, shy kiss to her lips.
Libby stared at her, frozen. The little girl in front of her seemed, for a second, so grown up it took her breath away. She gave her a bright, brave smile. “When Conrad goes to work, he kisses Wiona like that. I thought maybe that’s how you say goodbye to someone you care about.” She looked up at him, eyes shining. “Bye, Libby.”
She felt numb, moving almost on autopilot after that. She barely remembered getting on the plane, just the blur of airport lights and the cold press of the window against her forehead. She touched her lips, still dazed.
Suddenly, the plane jolted hard. He snapped out of it just in time to see several masked men rushing up the aisle.
“Don’t move! This is a hijacking!”
That night, Wiona hadn’t even gone to bed yet when someone rushed in. “Ma’am, something terrible has happened. The plane Libby was on... it crashed.”
All the sleepiness vanished in an instant. Wiona threw off her covers and Shelly hurried to help her get dressed.
“I just hope he makes it out alive,” Annette said, voice heavy with worry. “If not... I’ll never forgive myself. The Sullivan family will have failed both mother and son.”
It was only now that Wiona learned the full story. Donna’s husband had worked for the Sullivan family too. He was a driver, always following Jonathan everywhere. The car accident that killed Jonathan had also taken Libby’s father. That was why the Sullivan family had always tried to take care of Donna and Libby, making sure they were looked after.
Even when Libby was supposedly sent off to Antarctica as punishment, Conrad had actually put him in charge of their business there. It was a promotion in disguise. The salary freeze was just for show, really. Conrad had even handled Donna’s repeated mistakes quietly, covering for her without telling Wiona. But Donna couldn’t let things go. She kept making things worse for herself until tragedy finally struck.
If Donna hadn’t died, Libby wouldn’t have come back for the funeral. If she hadn’t discovered what her mother had done, maybe she wouldn’t have been so desperate to leave again. If she hadn’t been in such a hurry, maybe she wouldn’t have been on that flight.
Annette was heartbroken. Wiona had no idea how to comfort her. The whole thing felt unreal, like it couldn’t possibly be happening. The mood in Hawthorne Hall turned somber. No one expected something like this. Some of the staff wiped away tears when they thought no one was looking. They’d all worked with Donna and Libby for years. The older ones especially thought of them as family.
Now, they were both gone, one after the other. Even though there was no official announcement about Libby’s death, everyone knew a crash like that left no hope.
The days slipped by. Soon, it was December 29th, the day of the auction that Wiona was supposed to attend.
