Wiona arched an eyebrow. Seriously, did Kellen not realize what kind of event this was? She was causing a scene in front of everyone.
Wiona glanced at Jace standing next to her. His face was dark, practically stormy. Was he embarrassed because of Kellen, or was he just mad at how the auction organizers were treating them?
Curious, Wiona leaned in, listening.
The organizer, almost whispering, tried to explain, “Ma’am, I’m so sorry. There aren’t any more seats up front. Maybe you and Mr. Salisbury could just, you know, make do for now…”
Kellen fired back, “Why should we have to settle? This is your mistake. Are you really putting us with just anyone? Even Neil is sitting in the front rows. What, do you think the Salisbury family’s gone broke and can’t afford anything? If that’s the case, why invite us at all?”
The staff member stumbled over his words. “It’s just that you submitted ten valuable items for auction, so… that’s why you were invited…”
Jace couldn’t hold back anymore. He barked, “That’s enough!”
He pulled Kellen behind him. “Haven’t you embarrassed us enough? Please, just stop.”
With what little dignity he had left, Jace rubbed his temples and led Kellen to their seats.
The staff tossed out a few more fake compliments and hurried away. As he passed Wiona, he muttered under his breath, “Still acting like some CEO… If they really had that kind of status, would they be selling off their family’s jewelry? Just hilarious…”
Molly couldn’t help herself and let out a little snort. “Ma’am, Kellen really outdid herself today. Look how many people are sneaking photos of her.”
When Kellen realized Jace was really angry, her heart skipped a beat. Her angry look disappeared. She quickly put on her best pitiful face. “Jace, I know I embarrassed you. It’s my fault. I shouldn’t have tried so hard to stand up for us. From now on, I’ll do whatever you say. I won’t stick my neck out again. Please forgive me… Don’t be mad. When you’re angry, it feels like my heart is being cut to pieces. Look at us, we’re finally together. Let’s not let something like this come between us, okay? Jace…”
Her pleading softened Jace’s heart, just like always. No matter what, she was still the girl he’d fallen for. As for Wiona, he tried to push her out of his mind for good.
Meanwhile, in a quiet corner, Tina finally found Wiona. Her face lit up. “Wiona! I’ve been looking everywhere for you. Why are you sitting all the way back here?”
Wiona pressed a finger to her lips and pulled Tina down beside her. “Shh, Tina, keep your voice down. I don’t need everyone looking at me. Are you trying to blow my cover? The organizers already know Vivian’s here. Where I sit doesn’t matter.”
Tina giggled, covering her mouth. “Okay, okay, I get it.”
