“Was she doing this just to mess with me? Upping the bid by half a million like it was nothing. Who even does that? Could she tell how much I wanted that pendant, and now she was just raising the price to push me out?”
Kellen’s anger was written all over her face as she shot her paddle up again. “One million, five hundred and fifty thousand!”
Wiona didn’t hesitate. “Two million.”
Two million? That was way more than what the pendant was actually worth. The whole room turned to stare, curious and shocked. But then, people remembered. This was Vivian. She was famous for her sharp taste, a style icon with an eye for value. If she wanted something, there had to be a reason.
A devoted fan of Vivian’s got caught up in the moment and called out, “Two million, one hundred thousand!”
Others jumped in too, and the price quickly skyrocketed all the way to two point nine million.
Kellen couldn’t hold back anymore. She got up, eyes red, and marched straight over to Wiona.
“Vivian, please, let me have this pendant. I really, really love it. Look, I’m one of your biggest clients, remember?” She held up her hand, showing off a ring. “Come on, as a favor, you could just let me have it, right?”
Wiona looked up, unimpressed. She honestly couldn’t believe someone could be so shameless. It was almost impressive.
She gave a cold little laugh, then raised her paddle. “Three and a half million.”
Kellen’s face went pale. She stumbled back, glaring at Wiona, finally realizing she was never going to get her way.
Suddenly, Kellen seemed to radiate anger. Tim and Jim appeared out of nowhere, stepping between her and Wiona. Tim fixed her with a hard stare. “Ma’am, please return to your seat. If you don’t, we’ll have to escort you.”
She thought about throwing her ring at Wiona, but then remembered how much it was worth and stopped herself. In the end, she just swallowed her pride and chased after Jace, calling his name as she left the hall.
The rest of the crowd just looked at each other. Honestly, what a mess. Mr. Salisbury must have been desperate to marry someone like that. She didn’t hold a candle to that fake Morgan heiress. No wonder the Salisbury family fell apart so fast. It’s true, a family’s reputation really does depend on its women.
The bidding for the jade pendant picked up again. When the price hit four million, most people backed out. They could tell Vivian was determined to get this pendant, and it must have meant something special to her, even if it wasn’t really worth that much. The only one left bidding against her was the gentleman in seat eighteen, the same one who’d competed with Kellen at the start.
“Number eighteen bids four point two million. Any more offers?”
Wiona raised her paddle again. “Five million.”
