“Wiona saw everything. If it hadn’t been for her, I would have lost you forever.”
“I kept worrying about this and that, and all I did was hurt Wiona in the end.”
“Dad, this isn’t how we protect her.”
“You saw how she was treated today. We should be the family that stands up for her, so nobody would hurt her again. That’s what really matters.”
Summer’s words left everyone in the room speechless, except for Wilson and Bronwen.
Nicholas was the first to find his voice. “Wait, what’s going on? Why is it Wilson?”
“There has to be some mistake, right?”
“Wilson, Bronwen, can you explain what’s happening?”
Wiona stared straight at the two of them. “A mistake? What kind of mistake could it be?”
“Cassian saw his face clearly.”
“That’s why, after the surgery, he didn’t want Cassian to wake up. He kept bringing flowers, but every time, he used them as a cover to poison him.”
“If we hadn’t already been suspicious and started looking into him, he might have actually gotten away with it. He could have really turned Cassian into someone with dementia.”
“Wilson, can you even defend yourself against these accusations?”
A flash of anger crossed Wilson’s face, but somehow, he stayed perfectly calm, almost as if he still believed he was in control.
He turned to Cassian and spoke in a slow, steady voice. “Cassian, I don’t understand why you’re accusing me like that.”
“But before you say anything else, maybe think about whether you’ll be hurting the people you actually care about.”
“I’m sorry for Bronwen’s attitude. I know we hurt Wiona.”
“But you know, sometimes there are things beyond our control…”
“Cassian, do you really still want to testify against me?”
Wiona could tell Wilson was trying to use Cassian as a shield. She immediately stepped between them.
“Wilson, just stop. It’s pointless.”
She turned to Cassian. “You just need to stand by your decision. Name him as the culprit. Don’t think about anything else, no matter what you find out.”
“I’m not going to be affected by any of this.”
“If someone broke the law, they should pay for their crime.”
“And look at who’s standing next to her.”
Wiona took the picture, frowning. The second she saw the lady’s face, she felt something deep inside her tremble.
Mom? Was this really her mom?
The lady in the photo had long hair over her shoulders, beautiful and gentle features, a soft, kind look about her. Even though the picture was old and faded, it was obvious how stunning she must have been.
Wiona had never known anything about her birth mother. All she had was that pendant. She didn’t even know her mother’s name, let alone have a photo.
But as soon as she saw this picture, she just knew. This was her mom.
The lady was wearing the exact same pendant that Wiona now wore around her own neck.
Wiona reached up and touched the pendant, then looked at the man standing next to her mother. It was Wilson. No doubt about it.
What really broke Wiona was seeing the woman’s belly in the photo, just slightly rounded. She was pregnant.
Was her mom already carrying her back then?
“Wilson, who are you really?”
How could someone so disgusting possibly be her father?
