Wiona slipped her phone into her pocket, her nerves finally settling. All she could do now was wait for whatever tomorrow would bring.
The next morning came faster than she expected. Wiona woke up and reached for her phone. There was still nothing from Conrad, but a new email had come in. She opened it, not expecting much, and blinked in surprise. It was a wedding invitation from Jace.
He was marrying Kellen. The ceremony was set for March first, just two weeks away.
Wiona stared at the screen for a moment. Was Jace really inviting her to his own wedding? Did he want to flaunt their happiness in her face? Or was he planning something else… maybe hoping to claim the babies she was carrying?
Jace had lost his memory. He couldn’t possibly remember that her child wasn’t his. Wiona knew she had to be careful. If this was his plan, the gift she’d been preparing for them was almost ready to be unwrapped.
She called Mason. “Any updates on Kellen’s father lately?”
“He took some money and went back to his hometown,” Mason replied.
“Money? Did Kellen give it to him? Did she sell her jewelry?”
“I checked into it. She didn’t sell anything. Honestly, I have no idea where Kellen got the money. Should I look into it?”
“Definitely,” Wiona said. “And get the documents I asked you to collect about Kellen’s time abroad. I’ll need them in two weeks.”
Mason knew what that meant. Wiona was finally ready to make a move on those two. After waiting all this time for them to finally tie themselves together, there was no way she’d let this slip by.
“Understood.”
Once she hung up, Wiona got herself ready and went downstairs.
Phil was waiting in the living room. As soon as she stepped into the dining room, he hurried over with a pile of files. “Ma’am, I found some leads on the two people you asked me to look for.”
Wiona perked up immediately. “Let me see.”
It was about Bianca and Jean. Phil’s investigation traced Bianca’s disappearance back to the night Wiona herself had been kidnapped by Sam. Since then, Bianca had vanished without a trace. No one in the Salisbury family seemed to be searching for her. Daniel had learned the truth about his so-called daughter and no longer cared what happened to her. Jace, after the amnesia, just accepted the story that his sister had gone abroad.
Poor Bianca had been missing for months and no one even knew if she was still alive.
Wiona looked at Annette, suddenly feeling a little nervous. “Mom, you’re not… mad that I got involved, are you?”
She really was worried she’d overstepped.
But Annette just smiled and reached out to hug her. “Wiona, you’re a blessing to this family. Why would I be mad at you? For trying to help me patch things up with Alice? For caring about my happiness? I know you mean well. I’m not oblivious. I see everything you’re doing and I appreciate it, I really do.”
Wiona finally let herself breathe, just as Phil burst back in from outside.
He looked rattled, glancing at the three women with a face gone pale. For a moment, he couldn’t even get the words out.
Wiona’s heart dropped. She had a bad feeling.
She tried to act casual. “What’s wrong, Phil?”
His voice was hoarse and shaking. “Ma’am… Madam… something terrible has happened. It’s… it’s Mr. Sullivan. Peter called just now… Mr. Sullivan, he was ambushed in France two hours ago. He was shot, the bullet went through his head… They tried everything for two hours, but… they couldn’t save him… Mr. Sullivan… he’s gone.”
