Annette’s legs nearly gave out, but Wiona caught her just in time. She leaned close, her voice barely more than a whisper, “Mom, trust me. Even if Devin turns this whole place upside down today, he won’t find Alice.”

Wiona had already hidden Alice away. She’d worried that all this chaos would be too much for her, maybe even trigger another episode. So, as soon as she woke up that morning, before the funeral, she quietly made sure Alice was somewhere safe. No one would ever think to look there.

When Annette heard her, relief flickered in her eyes. “Alright…”

Devin’s face grew dark when he saw how calm Wiona looked. Fine. She still had tricks up her sleeve. She’d known to guard against him from the start. So this was the real Wiona, just like Donna said, clever and calculating. He couldn’t believe he’d actually been outplayed by her.

The funeral ended without further trouble, and Mr. Meraz showed up with his team, holding a folder. “Everyone, since you’re all here, we’ll begin reading Mr. Sullivan’s will.”

But before Mr. Meraz could even open the folder, Devin raised his hand. “Take them.”

His bodyguards moved instantly, surrounding and restraining Mr. Meraz and his people.

Wiona’s eyes widened. She looked at the Sullivan family bodyguards, and Phil gave a quick order, “Protect Mrs. Sullivan!”

All the bodyguards rushed forward, but Devin suddenly raised his arm and fired a shot into the air.

The bang shattered the heavy silence. Devin glared at everyone, his voice cold. “Nobody moves.”

He held a pistol in his hand, turning it to point right at Wiona’s belly. He really had the nerve to pull a gun in broad daylight, right in front of everyone. One second, and he could end a life.

Screams erupted all around. Kyle, Madison, Annette, and Phil all tried to shield Wiona, desperate to protect her.

Devin just laughed, then pulled the trigger again.

Nikolai and Drake dove in front of everyone. Another deafening shot rang out, and Nikolai collapsed.
