As soon as Devin spoke, chaos broke out.
“No!”
“No one touches her!” Annette cried, throwing herself over Wiona, her whole body shaking.
“Devin, if there’s any decency left in you, if you care at all about family, please, let us go. Wiona’s carrying the Sullivan family’s child. She’s carrying Conrad’s baby… You can’t touch her!” Her voice was trembling with fear, but she still stood in front of her daughter-in-law, refusing to back down.
Devin just gave a cold, mocking laugh. “Family? Has anyone in this house ever cared about family when it comes to me? Annette, tell me, did my father ever love me? Did my brother? When they left me to rot in that miserable place, where was their so-called family then?”
He turned to his men and barked, “Bring her here!” His face twisted, eyes wild, and the sight made his men flinch in terror.
Devin couldn’t stand useless people. Without a second thought, he lifted his gun, pressed the trigger, and fired.
The shot echoed. The man dropped instantly, half his head gone, eyes wide open, as if he couldn’t believe he’d just been killed by his own boss.
Devin finally felt a little better.
When he looked back at Wiona’s group, he caught something different in her eyes. Fear. He smirked, pleased with himself.
“So, my dear niece-in-law, are you going to walk over here yourself or do you want my men to drag you here? Maybe you’d rather see how good my aim is? I could take out the people next to you, one by one, until it’s your turn.”
Wiona’s fists clenched tight. Devin was sick. He was a monster. But she couldn’t risk calling his bluff. Everyone around her was someone she cared about. Annette, Madison, Tina, even the Morgans…
“No, no,” Jasmine sobbed, grabbing at the hem of Wiona’s dress. “Wiona, you can’t go. I won’t let you. Losing you nearly destroyed me. I just got you back. Please, don’t go again…”
Cole pulled Jasmine away, his grip rough. “Are you insane? He’s out of his mind. I don’t want to die. Keep quiet!”
Still, it gave her a bit of reassurance.
She steadied her breath and started forward, but Annette caught her in a desperate embrace.
“No… you can’t!” Annette pleaded. “Devin, take me! Just don’t hurt Wiona. Please, don’t touch her.”
Wiona looked down at Annette holding onto her so tightly.
“Mom…” she whispered, her voice breaking with real feeling. She meant it. She could feel how much Annette truly wanted to protect her.
But Jasmine, watching from the side, felt a sharp pang of jealousy. She wanted to run to Wiona too, but fear kept her rooted. Cole’s grip was so tight she couldn’t move even if she tried. Hearing Wiona call Annette “Mom” hurt more than she’d expected.
Annette held Wiona even tighter, her eyes fixed on Devin, filled with anger and determination. “Devin, I’ll do anything you want. Just don’t… don’t hurt my children anymore.”
