Divorced and Pregnant My New Life with a Billionaire Drives My Ex Crazy novel Chapter 540

Just as Sophie was about to throw caution to the wind, a sudden rustle from the thick grass stopped her cold. Instantly, everyone froze.

“What was that?” Molly whispered, clinging tightly to Wiona’s arm as she turned toward the sound.

The noise hadn’t come from ahead. It was from the right, from deep inside the brush.

Mason immediately stepped forward, putting himself between the group and the danger. “Probably just an animal,” he said, but his voice was tense.

Mr. Clements jumped back, scurrying to join Mrs. Clements and Sophie. He kept glancing over at Wiona, unease flickering in his eyes, but the growing noise from the bushes pulled his attention away. The sound grew louder, closer, but it wasn’t steady. It came in bursts, the tall grass swaying wildly, clear proof that something was headed straight for them.

Mrs. Clements’s face went pale. “Do you think it’s a python? I heard there are a lot of them out here.” Her voice was shaky, her body trembling. “Maybe we should go back. The path behind us is easier to run on…”

Mr. Clements shot her an approving look. Yes, turning back put Wiona and her people in front, leaving him and his family at the rear, right by the edge of the cliff. If chaos broke out, anything could happen. It was the perfect opening.

He started pushing Sophie’s wheelchair back the way they’d come. “What are you waiting for? Let’s go!”

Before he could move, Mason pulled a dagger from his boot. “Snake or not, I’m ready for whatever’s out there.”

He shoved aside the grass and stepped forward. Before he could get a good look, someone lunged out—a man smeared with blood from head to toe.

“Who are you?” Mason yelled, dagger raised.

The stranger didn’t answer. He attacked, aiming straight for Mason’s throat. Mason met him head on. The two men clashed, blades flashing.

Everyone else could only stare in horror at the blood-soaked figure that had appeared out of nowhere.

Sophie and Mrs. Clements screamed first.

Mr. Clements cursed loudly, his voice shaking. There was blood everywhere. The man looked like something straight out of a nightmare, his hair dripping red, his face so smeared with blood that not a single feature was clear. He was like a demon crawling out of a pit.

“Damn it,” the man spat, his voice low and icy, almost inhuman. In a blink, he spun his dagger and drove it forward.

Mrs. Clements’s eyes went wide in disbelief. She looked down at her chest, saw the blood, and collapsed. Blood poured from the wound.

“Don’t… hurt… her…” she gasped. “Sophie…” Her eyes went blank as she died.

Stunned silence fell. No one moved.

Sophie broke down first, screaming. “Mom! Mom! Get up, please! Don’t do this, please don’t leave me!” She tried to reach for her mother, but the man’s bloody hand held her tight, pinning her in place no matter how hard she struggled.

“We meet again, fiancée,” the man whispered in her ear, his voice oddly calm. “Don’t be so worked up. I’m glad to see you, too.”

At those words, everyone’s eyes widened in shock. The man covered in blood… was Devin.
