A loud bang jolted Wiona out of her sleep. She lay there, tossing and turning for another hour before she finally drifted off again. When she opened her eyes, morning light filled the room.
As soon as Wiona stepped out of her bedroom, Jean was already waiting outside with a cheery smile. “Mrs. Salisbury, Grandma Grace would like you to join her for breakfast in the small villa.”
Wiona made her way over and saw that Jace was already there. Actually, it looked like he’d been called to the villa the night before and hadn’t gone back since. He looked completely wiped out.
“Wiona,” Grandma Grace said, her voice soft and a little weak. “I wasn’t feeling well yesterday, so I didn’t know what happened out front until the girls told me later. This silly boy got himself into trouble again, so I made him sleep on the sofa here all night. Are you still upset?”
Wiona was starting to realize that Grandma Grace was much sharper than she seemed. She really knew how to make people feel welcome, and she was a master at giving a little push, then a sweet reward. Her obvious favoritism was almost charming.
But deep down, Wiona understood it was all about making her stay, about protecting her marriage with Jace.
“Grandma, you weren’t feeling well? Dr. Monroe never mentioned it. I should’ve come to see you yesterday, even if you didn’t ask. Are you feeling any better now?”
Grandma Grace really did look sick, her face pale and tired. She was already in the late stages of cancer. The Salisbury family had tried everything, spent a fortune on treatments, but now all they could do was count the days. If it weren’t for Dr. Monroe coming by every day to give her medicine and injections, she wouldn’t even have this much energy.
Hearing Wiona’s genuine concern, Grandma Grace smiled a little. “I’m fine, sweetheart, much better now. Why don’t you and Jace come with me today to my old nursing home? I want to visit some old friends.”
Wiona didn’t really want to go anywhere with Jace, but for some reason, he agreed right away. Wiona couldn’t say no to Grandma Grace, so she just smiled and nodded too.
Before they left, Kellen found out and had a meltdown in her room.
“You can’t go out with her! I came to this house just to be locked up every day. Don’t you get it? I’m at my limit. You promised you’d take care of me!”
“Jace, don’t go with her. Your grandma’s just trying to push you two together…”
Jace looked exhausted as he tried to calm her down. “Kellen, because of the room thing, Dad thinks I’m not caring enough about Wiona, so he’s ordered me to stay home and deal with it. I have to answer to Grandma too. I really don’t want to sleep on the sofa again tonight.”
“I know this is hard, but can’t you trust me? If something was ever going to happen between me and Wiona, don’t you think it would have happened by now? We’ve been married for over a year. My heart has always been yours. Please, don’t make this harder for me.”
Kellen looked at the tension in Jace’s face. She was practically shaking with jealousy, but she held back her tears and let him go.
The driver’s voice broke his thoughts. “Mrs. Salisbury, will you be riding with Mr. Salisbury? The car behind is forthe old lady.”
“I’ll ride with Grandma,” Wiona replied. “I want to keep her company.”
Jace had already shifted over to make room for her, but his face fell when she refused. He clenched his fists and said through gritted teeth, “Close the door.”
Wiona spent the whole ride chatting and laughing with Grandma Grace. Soon, they arrived at the nursing home. After Grandma Grace greeted a few old friends, she suddenly remembered that she hadn’t told the director they were coming. She insisted that Wiona and Jace go find him in person and refused to just call.
The nursing home grounds were huge, with a few buildings surrounded by gardens and wide lawns. The landscaping was beautiful and Wiona found herself enjoying the walk. She knew what Grandma Grace was up to, so she took her time, not rushing to find the director.
Jace followed behind until his phone rang. It was Kellen, checking in.
“You’re not alone with her, are you?”
