He figured as long as he kept a close watch on his son from now on, things should be fine.
“Thank you, Mr. Sullivan. Really, thank you…”
When Korey walked over, Dr. White quickly excused himself, eager to share the good news with the higher-ups at the care center.
Korey lowered his voice. “Mr. Sullivan, are you taking over this place… to bring your sister here?”
Conrad didn’t respond. He just stood there with his hands in his pockets, staring out at the lake.
Korey let out a weary sigh. “Even Remy’s been up at the estate lately. Is she getting worse?”
“Mr. Sullivan, the search for W has hit a wall. If we can’t find her soon… maybe it’s time to try a different kind of treatment for your sister.”
“After you and your sister were kidnapped all those years ago, she developed PTSD. She hasn’t left the house since.”
Korey’s voice trembled with anger. “Those awful kidnappers… With all your power, every lead still slips away. It’s like they’re a bunch of rats hiding in the sewers. Unless we tear Stonehill apart, they’ll always find a way to disappear.”
Conrad’s face stayed calm and unreadable, but Korey had worked with him long enough to know the hatred ran deep.
“There’s something dark in Stonehill, something nobody can get a hold of,” Korey said quietly.
Conrad’s voice was cold and steady. “One way or another, I’ll pull them out of hiding.”
Korey nodded, determined, making a silent promise that he’d help see it through.
Suddenly, Conrad turned and walked off. “Don’t follow me,” he said over his shoulder.
He headed back to the fork in the hedge. To his surprise, Wiona was still there. She sat on a picnic blanket with the boy from before, sharing cookies and tea.
“Eat up,” the little boy told her, his face earnest. “If you’re full, the baby in your tummy won’t be hungry. Do you like the chocolate ones? There’s strawberry too.”
Wiona couldn’t refuse. She took a small, polite bite.
“Ms. Morgan.”
She looked up, startled to see a tall, strikingly handsome man standing over her. Where did he come from?
When she finally stopped, Conrad was already there, leaning against the hedge, his gaze steady and unreadable. “Lost?”
“If you’re willing to talk a bit more about W, I’d be happy to show you the way out.”
“No, really. I can find my own way,” Wiona said, trying to sound confident.
She turned to double back, but instead, she wandered deeper and deeper until she hit a dead end. Conrad never hurried, just followed at his own pace. Seeing her panic, he tried again.
“Well, Ms. Morgan? Looks like it’s about to rain. You don’t want to catch a cold, do you?”
His eyes flicked down to her belly.
Wiona bristled, instinctively covering her stomach and taking a step back.
“I don’t get it. Why is the Sullivan family so desperate to find W? I’ve told you everything I know. There’s nothing left to say—”
She didn’t get to finish. From the other side of the hedge, Jace’s voice called out, “Wiona, are you in there?”
