It was just a fraction of what Jace had blown on Kellen, honestly. But really, who could turn their nose up at five million? Not her.
Even so, Wiona knew exactly what Jace was doing. He just wanted to keep her quiet, keep her happy, at least until the baby arrived. She wasn’t fooled for a second. She’d seen the real Jace, and there was no way she’d ever trust him again.
Jace leaving in the middle of everything had Grandma Grace fuming. So when they got back to the old house the next day, she made him sleep on the couch again. Jace, who was used to every comfort, looked absolutely miserable. Kellen seemed genuinely upset for him, and for a while she didn’t dare stir up any more drama.
After a couple of days of peace, Wiona finally got a call from Mason, her café’s manager.
“Boss, we found Kellen’s family.”
Wiona set down the dumpling wrapper she was working on, nodded to Grandma Grace, and stepped out with her phone.
“Go ahead,” she said, voice steady and calm, as if she was just checking in on a delivery.
Mason sounded much more excited. “You’ll never guess where they are.”
Wiona cut him off. “Before I married Jace, someone slipped me her file. I remember her family’s from the countryside. She was a top student, but her family was dirt poor, so she had some sponsor who helped her all the way to Stonehill College. She met Mr. Salisbury there, and they fell for each other. I’m not sure exactly where her family’s from. I heard Jace say her family treated her horribly, so she basically cut them off.”
Mason finally dropped the suspense. “That’s not the whole story.”
Jace had been sticking close to Grandma Grace these last few days, clearly trying to smooth things over with Wiona too. He knew if he didn’t straighten up, Daniel might never let him back into Salisbury Corporation. Grandma Grace seemed to take every chance to throw them together—if it wasn’t cooking, it was pottery, or organizing the study, or playing chess with her. In just a few days, Wiona had spent more time with Jace than she had in the last six months combined.
She was honestly at her wit’s end. As soon as the dumplings were done, she pretended to be exhausted and slipped out.
She hadn’t gone far, just past the rose garden, when she spotted Bianca sneaking around one of the corners. Wiona could tell right away Bianca was up to something, so she followed her quietly.
What she saw next made her blood boil.
