“Mr. Salisbury, the babies are safe, but your wife…”
Jace’s face went pale. His whole body trembled.
Neil, who’d just rushed in with Kellen, jumped ahead of Jace. “What about her? Forget the babies, just save her!”
“If you don’t fix her, you’ll regret it. I swear I’ll make this hospital pay.” Neil’s grip tightened on the director’s collar, eyes blazing with anger, even more furious than Jace.
Jace stared at him for a long second, surprised. Kellen let out a shaky breath, a little relieved. “As long as the babies are alright…”
Jace spun to glare at her. He didn’t say a word, but that look was like a cold wave crashing over Kellen. She shivered.
What was that supposed to mean?
“You still don’t trust me?” Her voice cracked. “I told you, I’d never hurt her!” Kellen’s voice was shaking, on the edge of falling apart.
Jace turned away. “I just never thought you could be so heartless.”
“Me? Heartless?” Kellen pointed at herself, barely believing what she was hearing. “Jace, how can you say that?”
“At a time like this, isn’t it normal for me to worry about the babies?” She wiped at her tears. “Or are you more worried about her, about Wiona?”
“Jace, what are you really trying to say?”
The chaos and drama of the night hadn’t truly broken Kellen, but Jace’s attitude now… it scared her. Tears streamed down her face as she grabbed Jace’s sleeve, desperate.
“Jace, please don’t do this. Don’t you remember what you promised me? Don’t you remember how she got pregnant?”
“I’m just as scared and worried as you are. I have no reason to hurt her. None at all.”
Jace’s thoughts were a mess. He couldn’t even focus on what Kellen was saying anymore. But seeing her eyes red and swollen from crying, his heart softened, just a little.
“Stop crying.”
The director finally snapped, shoving Neil’s hand off his collar and barking, “Enough already!”
“I wasn’t finished talking. I know you two are big shots in Stonehill, and a small hospital like ours can’t afford to offend you. But we’re not punching bags either.”
“Well, Mr. Sullivan, actually… there’s a lot going on…” He stumbled over his words, not daring to mention the shady favor he’d done for a friend. He’d just wanted to help out and make a little extra cash. Now it felt like he’d landed in deep water.
He swallowed hard. “She is stable now.”
“Do you know her, Mr. Sullivan?”
Conrad didn’t answer. He heard she was okay, pulled off his gloves and tossed them aside. Then he turned, hands in his pockets, and headed down the hall. “Take me to her.”
Wiona had already been moved to a VIP suite. The story was that she was in the ICU and couldn’t have visitors, but really, Wiona just wanted a quiet night to herself. She’d told them to keep everyone else away.
But there was no refusing Conrad. He wasn’t just the hospital’s biggest investor. He was their golden ticket.
On the surface, Mr. Sullivan was the most powerful man in Stonehill, the city’s richest and most untouchable tycoon. But there was more to him. He had another life.
He was also the most mysterious young neurosurgeon in China, famous around the world for his awards and skill, known only as Dr. S.
How he managed it all, the director had no idea. He just admired Conrad more than anyone.
