The Mayor of Dowel City, Richard Davidson, also attended, and he came with his son, who was in a wheelchair.
"Mr. King! Look! I can now stand for a minute!" The mayor's young boy said, referring to Adrian.
"Excellent, Brice," Adrian greeted. "Soon, you'll be able to stand longer!"
Yet again, Adrian made introductions, and like at the last table, the Davidsons also bought Riley's jewelry. Curiosity got to Anthony, and he couldn't help but ask, "I'm just wondering how you know my son, Mayor Davidson."
Mayor Richard's brows met. He looked at Adrian in shock. He asked, "Doesn't your father know, Adrian?"
"He - um." Adrian turned to Anthony and suggested, "He probably forgot. We have been swamped lately."
Anthony did not know why, but he felt it was a slap on his face. Whatever it was, shouldn't he know? Adrian was his son!
"Adrian sponsors a sports camp in Dowel for disabled children once a year. I met Adrian after I enrolled my son two years ago." The Mayor suddenly wept. He sniffed his tears away when he described, "It changed our lives."
Richard touched Brice's shoulder and explained, "My son was devastated when he learned he could no longer walk after a hockey accident, but the camp gave him hope. Adrian happened to be the inspirational speaker that year. He convinced my son that life goes on. Brice had been attending camp ever since."
"It's very touching," Riley commented. Like the mayor, she was also in tears. She gave Brice a high five and said, "You did a great job, Brice!"
Riley gripped Adrian's hand and expressed, "And I am even more proud of Adrian for the good that he does."
Was Anthony proud of what he had discovered? Of course, he was, but the words were stuck in his throat.
Abner looked at him in disbelief. He pointed out, "Well, if you had stopped listening to your wife and had taken time to get to know your son better, you would know."
Anthony frowned. He leaned back in his seat and contemplated. He would not have attended Adrian's engagement dinner if it had not been for Tonet's suggestion.
In previous celebrations, they would have dinners as a family. Adrian did not speak much; when he did, he argued with Tonet and Fredrick. However, this party was different. Anthony was seeing how others viewed Adrian. He gulped and wondered, 'Did I not... see right?'
Anthony's thoughts were interrupted when a male host called everyone's attention. "Welcome to Mr. Adrian King and Riley Allen's engagement dinner."
He went on and on about relationships and marriage before proceeding, "We want to get to know our couple more. What everyone has been dying to ask is... how did our couple meet? Was it love at first sight?"
