Camilla grabbed her tablet and queued up a cartoon for Jasper. In an instant, his attention drifted to the screen, and he forgot all about the awkward conversation from before.
The next morning, Camilla’s phone rang. It was the hospital. The paternity test results were in. Her nerves were so frazzled she could barely stay in one lane on the drive over. By the time she reached the bright corridors, her hands were shaking so badly she wasn’t sure she could open the envelope. What if her marriage—five years of her life—had all just been a lie? What if she really couldn’t handle the truth staring her in the face?
Camilla slumped onto a bench and tried to steady herself, forcing her fingers to stop trembling.
Just as she worked up the courage to peel open the envelope, a familiar voice rang out. “Camilla, what are you doing here? Are you feeling alright?” Elise was inching down the hallway, leaning on a caregiver for support.
Camilla shoved the envelope into her bag and mustered a wobbly smile. “Just caught a cold, nothing serious. The doctor gave me some meds. Mom, let’s get you back to your room, okay?”
Elise eyed her up and down. “Camilla, are you hiding something from me again? You look so pale… and you’ve been coming by the hospital a lot. Is there… something going on with you and Barnard?”
Camilla shook her head. “No, Mom, really. There’s nothing up between us. I came before to check on you. This time was just to pick up a prescription.”
She knew there was no point hiding the divorce anymore. Still, the things Daisy had said were too crazy for her to process, let alone dump on Elise when the woman was already unwell.
After walking Elise back to the room, the nurse in charge stopped Camilla in her tracks. “Camilla, good timing. We were just about to call you. Mrs. Sullivan needs a medication change. The doctor has a new treatment plan and needs your approval.”
“Alright. I’ll go talk to him now.”
A half hour later, Camilla wrapped up the meeting with the doctor. By the time she returned, Elise was fast asleep and only the caregiver was left on watch. Camilla explained a few things, then gathered her stuff and made her way out of the sterile, humming building.
Sitting alone in her parked car, she finally opened the envelope. Reading the words, she felt her heart crash down from its high wire, landing with a thud in her chest. Relief flared for a second, but then a hollow emptiness crept in. Something didn’t feel right. She couldn’t shake it.
Barnard didn’t hesitate. “Stop worrying. Magee’s got connections in every hospital here. If Camilla tries anything else, he’ll know.”
Davina finally seemed to relax. “Okay… and, Barnard, about what you said… you really plan to marry me? You’ve been with Camilla a lot lately and I… well, I worry. Can you just tell me what you’re planning?”
“When I find the right kindergarten for Daisy and she’s sent away, you’ll know,” Barnard said. “You know how I feel about you. Why are you still doubting me? I won’t let you down.”
Davina still looked uncertain but didn’t press. “Alright. I’ll talk to Daisy, try to calm her down.”
Daisy had barely spoken to her in days. She was still furious about getting slapped, and then Barnard had grounded her after they came home. The girl had even refused to eat for a while. With Daisy about to be sent to a boarding school, Davina knew she needed to get her in check and make sure she didn’t say anything out of line. The last thing she needed was more drama. She’d fought hard for this chance and couldn’t let Daisy mess things up now.
