“What about Daisy? How is she doing now?”
“I’ve already handled it with the school. Davina took her away, and I’ll make sure she never gets another chance to mess with you. Camilla, you and I, we’re in this together. Don’t let people who don’t matter come between us, alright?” Barnard’s voice was soothing, hopeful, as if he could restore the trust that had cracked between them.
While he was trying to comfort her, Barnard actually started to relax. If Camilla still cared about Daisy’s whereabouts, that meant, in some small way, she still cared about him too.
On the surface, Camilla nodded and played along. But when Barnard looked away, she quickly slipped another strand of his hair into her pocket.
To anyone watching, they looked like a perfect couple, all smiles and gentle words, with no trace of trouble between them. Barnard even drove Camilla to her office and stopped to buy her a bouquet of roses on the way, just to make the picture complete.
It all felt flawless, almost too good to be real.
As soon as Barnard left, Camilla called Dahlia over and quietly handed her a small sample she had just collected. Dahlia’s online shop was running a promotion and she was about to head out of town for work, so she could take care of everything discreetly without anyone asking questions.
Later that night, Barnard showed up at Camilla’s workplace again. Their childhood friends were having a get-together, and Barnard insisted she come with him. There was no way for Camilla to refuse, so she went along.
The private karaoke room was dark and loud, crowded with laughter and the smell of spilled drinks. There was an air of luxury that felt fake and suffocating to Camilla. She barely lasted a few minutes before mumbling an excuse and stepping out into the hall for air.
Magee followed her, just as she expected he might.
Light reflected in wild patterns along the hallway, making everything feel off-kilter. Magee, without his doctor’s coat, still looked just as distant and sharp as ever, clearly not fitting in among the party crowd.
Camilla never really liked Magee, but not because he was Barnard’s old friend. It was something else she couldn’t quite name.
“Camilla, can we talk?” Magee stepped into her path before she could walk away.
She glanced at him, eyebrows raised. “You and I don’t know each other. What could we possibly have to talk about?”
“Have you seen Dahlia lately? How has she been?” Magee asked directly.
Camilla gave a bitter laugh and crossed her arms. “So that’s what this is about. You set up the dinner so Barnard would drag me here, and you could ask about Dahlia? You really think I’d just hand over news about her?”
For a second, Magee’s usually blank face tightened. “It wasn’t meant to be like that. Camilla, I don’t want to cause any trouble. I just...”
Actually, Camilla hadn’t planned to visit Elise. But before she could protest, Magee had already pulled his car around to the entrance and opened the passenger door. “Come on, I’ll drop you off.”
Camilla hesitated, catching something unspoken in his words, but finally slid into the car. When they reached the hospital driveway, they spotted Barnard’s car pulling up at almost the same time.
The back door opened, and Barnard gently lifted Daisy into his arms.
Davina rushed after them, worry written all over her face. They hurried inside, never once noticing Camilla and Magee standing nearby.
A few minutes later, Magee’s phone rang. It was Barnard, urging him to come in right away. Magee was one of the top orthopedic doctors in Cabinda, so it wasn’t a stretch to guess Daisy had a bone injury.
Magee ended the call and looked over at Camilla. Before he could get a word out, Camilla shook her head. “Is this what you call being sincere? Selling out your own friend just for some news about Dahlia? Too bad I don’t care. Whether Barnard’s working or visiting someone makes no difference to me.”
“And how can you be so sure this is all I have to offer?” Magee started, but Camilla was already turning away.
“Not interested. Dahlia’s my best friend. I’d never hurt her for anyone,” Camilla said, her words leaving no room for argument.
