“Of course, Dad. You’re right. If it weren’t for the Carter family, I’d probably still be a broke student without a steady job, let alone able to save my mom. So honestly, being Mrs. Carter is way more important to me than any romance ever could be.”
Camilla knew she wasn’t going to get free of any of this just yet, so for now, she might as well go along with Calvin and see what she could gain for herself.
Watching Calvin’s face relax a little, Camilla kept going. “All these years, I’ve put my heart and soul into running BLC. Barnard always told me it was our love’s greatest accomplishment. That’s why I never held back, never even complained when every penny the company made just ended up in his account. But now… I have no idea how I’m supposed to feel about this company anymore.”
“If you have something you want, say it.” Calvin’s brow creased, and he looked like he was about to snap at her for pushing, but then he suddenly let it go.
Camilla didn’t hesitate. “Change the company’s name. I want half the profits, and the dividends sent directly to me.”
She knew Calvin would never agree to let her take everything from BLC. That was completely off the table. But this—this was more realistic. What she deserved, what Barnard owed her, she was going to get back someday, piece by piece.
With a sharp, bitter laugh, Calvin fixed his gaze on her. “Wow. I never thought you’d be so greedy.”
He was probably thinking his precious son really had a good eye for women. The mistress hidden away was unremarkable, and the wife he brought home—well, she wasn’t about to settle for less than she deserved.
“Back then, Barnard and I trusted each other completely,” Camilla replied. “I never minded what was his or mine. But now he’s cheated. I have to look out for myself. If you won’t agree, Dad, I can step down. I’ll just disappear into the background as Mrs. Carter.”
Step down?
Calvin’s eyes flashed, and she could tell he’d been caught off guard. He knew exactly how much Camilla had done for BLC. In their circle, everyone knew her jewelry was a hit. If she suddenly left to “focus on family,” the rumors would never die down.
After a long pause, Calvin finally caved in. “Fine. I’ll agree. But from now on, you stick to your role, be the perfect Mrs. Carter, and don’t go stirring up trouble.”
Instantly, the man perked up, tucking away the money before leaning forward. “Honestly, I didn’t get the full picture. What I do know is that after Davina was brought in yesterday, they made her kneel outside in the courtyard. Barnard kept trying to talk Calvin around, but Calvin wouldn’t give in. Then, all of a sudden, Davina passed out. A doctor was called, and after that, Barnard took her away.”
He handed Camilla some photos, the kind snapped from high up in a tree. For the distance, the shots were actually pretty clear, but it was obvious he couldn’t get anything more.
So Calvin’s attitude changed just because Davina fainted? Davina had collapsed at The Carter Estate before, and Calvin hadn’t cared. There had to be another reason.
After sending off the investigator, Camilla still couldn’t put it all together. She pushed her suspicions aside for now and made a call to have someone dig into Davina’s past.
She’d promised herself Davina would never get away with hurting her mother. As long as Davina had Barnard’s protection and Calvin’s help, Camilla couldn’t take her down openly. But she’d make sure life was never easy for her.
With all that handled, Camilla finally made her way home—and found Barnard waiting for her.
