At the Carter Group, Barnard had been shown the door, and Calvin was back in charge. Slowly, everything started falling back into place.
That sense of calm didn’t last long. It shattered the second Camilla got a call from the police.
The officer on the other end sounded a little tense. “Mrs. Carter, we need you to come down to the station. Your child is here. She’s lost.”
Camilla’s heart skipped a beat. She called Susan right away to see if Jasper was safe, only to find out that Lance had picked him up earlier that morning. She tried Lance’s phone too, but no one picked up.
With no other options, Camilla grabbed her keys and drove straight to the station, worry twisting in her stomach. But the moment she saw Daisy sitting inside, all that tension just disappeared.
The officer explained as soon as she walked in. “Mrs. Carter, this girl came in on her own. She said she’s Barnard’s daughter and asked us to call him. We couldn’t reach him, so we called you instead.”
Camilla stared at Daisy and couldn’t help but feel the whole thing was just ridiculous. Sure, she and Davina weren’t on good terms, but that didn’t mean she was about to mess with a child.
“This isn’t my kid, and I’m not responsible for taking her home,” Camilla said evenly. “But I can give you her mother’s phone number. Just have her mom come get her.”
The officer nodded, getting ready to call Davina, but Daisy suddenly jumped down from her chair, her voice trembling. “She doesn’t want me. I don’t want to go with her. I just want Barnard. Please, call Barnard for me? Can you ask him to come?”
Camilla just shook her head. What a handful.
She looked at Daisy. “I don’t care why you’re fighting with your mom, and I really don’t have time for this right now. If you want Barnard, then sit here and wait for him to pick up the phone.”
Daisy defiantly crossed her arms. “Fine. I’ll wait. Barnard likes me the most. He’ll never abandon me.”
There was a smugness in her voice, and she even shot Camilla a look that was part challenge, part victory.
Camilla just rolled her eyes. The hostility in Daisy's gaze was clear, but then again, she never really expected Davina’s daughter to like her anyway. “Whatever,” she replied, not interested in arguing.
Camilla answered in a strange, almost playful tone. “You know, there’s a pet hospital just around the corner. My friend knows a lot of the best vets there. Want me to introduce you?”
Davina looked caught off guard. “Camilla, I’m talking to Daisy. What are you even saying?”
Camilla’s lips curled in a half-smirk. “If you don’t get it, never mind. Guess there are some things you’re not equipped to understand.”
A young guy waiting nearby for his own appointment overheard and snorted with laughter. He helpfully told Davina, “Lady, what she meant was you should stop yapping like a dog.”
Lady?
Davina bristled at the word and turned pale at the explanation that followed. Still, she managed to keep her tears going, turning to Camilla, all hurt and helpless. “Camilla, Daisy is my little girl. She’s in pieces right now, and I just want to know what happened. How could you say something so mean to me? Don’t you think it’s time to explain what you did to Daisy?”
