Divorced the Cheat Married the Fleet (Camilla and Lance) novel Chapter 189

Barnard’s face flashed with surprise. His first instinct was to doubt Camilla, but the way she stood there so calm and collected made him uneasy.

“Camilla, you know this isn’t the time for bravado. You—”

He didn’t get the chance to finish. A police officer approached Camilla and said, “Ma’am, we’ve seen the news online. This is all just a misunderstanding. Give us your statement and you can go.”

Barnard stared, baffled. “What do you mean? How is this settled?” He looked at Camilla, panic creeping in. He’d been talking to her the whole time—how had things already turned around?

Camilla didn’t bother replying. She followed the officer away to finish the paperwork.

She’d already known about Davina’s fall and miscarriage last night. The phone Lance had given her had a recording—everything that happened at Afterglow after she left. That’s when Camilla realized Lance, even though he didn’t follow her there, had been in touch with her bodyguards the whole time. When she asked them to collect the luxury gifts Barnard had given Davina, Lance told them to quietly plant a camera at the club.

After seeing that footage, Camilla pretty much figured the Carter family would try to set her up with this. She had no plans to let them get away with it. Just in case anything unexpected happened, she sent a copy of the video to Dahlia, asking her to post it if things went south.

So, when the police said it was over, she knew things had flipped online.

On her way out, Camilla caught a glimpse of Barnard taking a call. His face turned even darker with every word he heard.

When she stepped outside the station, Barnard was still standing at the entrance waiting for her.

Barnard stretched out his hand, still blocking her path. “Camilla, if you go through with this, aren’t you afraid I’ll tell everyone who Jasper’s real father is? Do you really want people to know you had a son with some homeless guy?”

Just hearing him dredge up that old threat made something tighten in Camilla’s throat. Even after all this time, even though she’d almost grown numb to everything in that recording, hearing Barnard call him a “homeless guy” still cut deep. She had to swallow down the urge to gag.

“The news never confirmed anything. I can still just say Jasper is my son. But think hard, Camilla. You might not care, you might want to fight me no matter what, but can Jasper really handle learning the whole truth?” Barnard pressed.

The worst of it—the ugly, raw truth—hadn’t reached Jasper yet. Right now, all he knew was that Barnard wasn’t his real dad. Barnard was right; there was still room to change how this played out.

Maybe before, Camilla would waver or give in. But now, she remembered Jasper sitting by her side last night, absolute in his loyalty—and Lance, who could calm Jasper with just a few words.
