Barnard didn’t look any better than anyone else.
Davina had finally started to feel a little stronger today. She’d complained that staying in the hospital was too stifling, and because Barnard was worried about her and the baby, he decided taking her out for a walk might help. Running into Camilla here hadn’t even crossed his mind. And what shocked him more, before he could wrap his head around what was happening, Davina just dropped to her knees right in front of Camilla.
Barnard had already been burning with shame, even before Calvin arrived. He was the one who ended things so harshly with Camilla just to be with Davina. Now Davina was kneeling to Camilla, basically grinding his pride into the dirt.
Even if Calvin hadn’t walked in, Barnard was moments away from snapping at Davina.
He couldn’t hold back anymore, and grabbed Davina’s arm, yanking her up. “That’s enough, Davina. The Carter family can handle its own problems. You don’t need to get involved.”
Davina kept insisting she meant well, but everything she did just made things messier. Thinking of everything that had happened lately, Barnard glanced over at Camilla without meaning to. She looked nothing like him with his tired, worn-out face. Camilla still looked perfect, not even flinching as Davina clung to her in this humiliating scene. She always stayed calm, no matter what. Even when they’d been together, Camilla never let things spiral out of control like this.
That thought made Barnard even more frustrated, and he pulled Davina with extra force, trying to get her on her feet.
Davina wouldn’t stop. “Barnard, how can you say that? I’m pregnant with your child. We’ll be a family, sooner or later. I should do something for you. I know you and your family have your pride, but it’s okay. I’ll lower myself and beg Camilla if I have to. I’m not ashamed.”
Davina might not care about feeling humiliated, but Barnard definitely did.
Her words didn’t just tear away his pride. It was like she was announcing to everyone that the Carter family, even all together, wasn’t a match for Camilla, and they were hopeless without her.
Calvin pointed at Barnard, his fingers trembling. He suddenly felt dizzy, almost passing out.
Laura sighed, louder and louder. “Isn’t this humiliating enough? Get her up right now. What do you think you’re doing?”
Davina still had a fistful of Camilla’s shirt in her hand. Camilla wasn’t in any rush to leave. She just watched everything, her eyes cold.
Calvin, on the other hand, looked like he might explode from holding back his anger. He glared at Barnard, the sharpness in his eyes saying everything he couldn’t say out loud in front of everyone.
And Camilla, she just started to smile. She didn’t even try to hide her amusement. “Wow, Dad, you really went all out. Not only did you invite me here, you even put on a little show to entertain me. But I’ve got work to do, so I’m not going to stick around for the rest. You all enjoy yourselves.”
It was only when Camilla’s teasing words echoed that Davina finally seemed to realize how ridiculous she looked. Her face turned cherry red, her whole vibe suddenly awkward.
Camilla turned to go, but right then, the hotel doors flew open and Jasper came running in.
“Mom!”
“Jasper, what are you doing here?” Camilla was instantly on alert, both surprised and anxious. She reached out, drawing Jasper close so he was safely behind her.
