Divorced the Cheat Married the Fleet (Camilla and Lance) novel Chapter 20

“Jasper is the master of this house, so of course his dog is just as special. That’s settled.” Davina flicked an apologetic look at Camilla. “I’m going to check on Daisy. You go and talk to Camilla, alright? Don’t let us be the reason she’s upset.”

With that, Davina slipped away to Daisy’s room, leaving Barnard searching Camilla’s face. He sighed. “Camilla, you saw it for yourself. Davina really didn’t mean any harm. This is just a misunderstanding. I hope you won’t hold this against her anymore. She’s had it rough these past few years and has helped me a lot. I brought her here so she could relax for once, not to make her feel unwelcome.”

No harm? Maybe Camilla could’ve bought that in the past, but after what happened with Daisy’s allergy, there was no way she believed Davina was only trying to protect Jasper.

“I’ve already said this,” Camilla replied evenly. “If you think I’m not good enough, I can take Jasper and leave.”

“Camilla, stop overreacting. We’re married. If you leave with our son over something so minor, what are people going to say? Davina is willing to compromise, so the dog stays for now, okay? And don’t talk about moving out again.” Barnard’s voice was gentler now. He sounded almost like he was pleading, shaken by Camilla’s threat.

From Daisy’s room, harsh coughs could be heard even with the door closed. That sobering sound hung in the air. Barnard comforted Camilla a bit more before saying, “Take Jasper to his room and help him settle down. I’ll go see Daisy.”

Jasper was pale and clutching the puppy tightly, clearly shaken by the argument and everything that had happened. Camilla didn’t press the conversation any further. She took Jasper’s hand and led him up to his room.

Only when they were safe behind his door did Jasper finally let the puppy down. His voice trembled. “Mom, did I do something wrong? Should I not have kept Snow?”

Camilla bent down so they were eye to eye. “Why do you think that, honey? Is it because of Daisy?”

Jasper bobbed his head. “She got sick because of Snow… but I really love Snow. I don’t want to have to give him away. What should I do?”

Daisy’s illness kept coming back. That very night, Barnard rushed her to the hospital. The housekeeper later reported that Daisy’s allergic reaction was serious—she’d probably need to stay in the hospital for about a week. Barnard barely returned home, staying at Daisy’s side as much as possible. He even handed off a lot of work stuff from The Carter Group for Camilla to handle.

As soon as she felt Jasper was okay, Camilla asked Susan to look after him and went out again to hunt for a new place. Finding the right house wasn’t easy, especially with Jasper’s kindergarten about to start—she really wanted something close to the school, which made it even tougher.

After several days of early mornings and late nights, she had a few options to consider, but none of them truly felt right. She’d made appointments to see two more houses, but that evening, just as she was leaving a meeting she’d covered for Barnard at The Carter Group, a sudden rainstorm came out of nowhere. The rain was so heavy she could barely see, so she rescheduled her house viewings for the next day.

Back at Saddlebrook Estates, Camilla spotted Barnard's car in the driveway. It hit her suddenly—today was the day Daisy was supposed to come home from the hospital.

She hadn't even opened the front door when she heard Jasper crying inside.
