Divorced the Cheat Married the Fleet (Camilla and Lance) novel Chapter 209

Camilla just couldn’t figure out the Carter family. Their logic made zero sense to her.

She was still deciding whether or not to egg Davina on when Barnard called the very next day, asking to meet up and talk about the divorce. The timing almost made her laugh.

Camilla went, but she brought her lawyer along, just in case. Barnard was already waiting in a private room at the teahouse, looking like he hadn’t smiled in weeks. On the table sat a few thin sheets of paper—the divorce agreement.

When Barnard saw Camilla’s lawyer walk in behind her, he shot Camilla a look full of sarcasm. “Wow, Camilla. That’s how little you trust me? Or are you just in a rush to get rid of me?”

She pulled out a chair and sat right across from him, her voice calm. “You know me. I don’t trust you, and I can’t wait to be divorced. So I hope this agreement is exactly what I asked for.”

It was late autumn and she wore a khaki sweater, her hair piled into a loose, low bun. A couple of strands had fallen around her face, giving her a softer look than usual. But her words were anything but gentle.

Just as she reached out to grab the contract, Barnard put his hand down over the papers. He stared at her. “You’re the one giving Davina all those ideas, aren’t you?”

Camilla didn’t even flinch. “No idea what you’re talking about.” She just took the contract anyway, dragging it out from under his hand and handing it straight to her lawyer for review.

Barnard gave a bitter laugh. “I know Davina went to see you. Right after that, she and her family and the Green family started making a scene. Davina’s not the type to think up plans like that. Using one enemy against another? That’s not her style. So it must have been your idea. Teaching someone step by step how to steal your own husband. You really are magnanimous.”

“Husband? Seriously, Barnard? With what face are you calling yourself my husband? Stop acting like a victim. You told everyone you loved her. Now she’s pregnant with your kid and I’m stepping aside so you two can be together. Seems like a win for all of us. What are you so upset about?” Camilla replied, barely glancing at him.

She was done arguing with him. Instead, she turned to her lawyer and asked, “Is it all in order?”

Barnard snorted. “I brought the contract. What’s there for me to back out of? How about we compromise? I sign, you withdraw, then we register together.” Camilla’s open distrust left him fuming. He stared at her for a long time, searching for any glimpse of the woman who used to make dinner for him, who once looked at him with warmth. All he saw now was coldness in her eyes.

“Barnard, if I’m right, your dad gave you an ultimatum. Dragging this out won’t help anyone. Let’s get this over with,” she said lightly, cutting right to the point.

Barnard hated it whenever anyone brought up the fact he couldn’t stand up to Calvin. He wanted to argue, but the truth hurt too much.

Finally, he grabbed the pen, gripping it so hard that the veins in his hand popped out. He pressed down so hard it almost ripped through the paper.

Camilla watched the ink slowly spell out his name. The moment he signed, it felt like that single piece of paper had finally sliced apart the last thread connecting her and Barnard for good.
