Divorced the Cheat Married the Fleet (Camilla and Lance) novel Chapter 243

The clerk took a look at Camilla’s ID, then turned to Barnard, waiting for him to hand his over. Davina was staring at him too, the hope clear on her face.

Barnard just said, “I don’t have it.”

Those words seemed to suck all the air out of the room. Everything went silent.

Davina was the first to crack. “What do you mean, you don’t have it?”

Barnard shrugged. “Who carries that stuff everywhere? I never said I brought my ID. You two dragged me here, remember?”

He honestly sounded like he didn’t care at all, not even trying to take responsibility.

Camilla felt her head pounding, vision swimming. Just looking at Barnard’s smug, careless face made her shake with frustration. All morning, all the way from home to the courthouse, she had double-checked with him, over and over. Not once did he say he’d forgotten his documents. He’d lined up with them, watched as she’d paid extra for their place in line, and he’d never said a word.

Now, right when everything was about to be over, he comes out with this. One sentence, and it’s like he’s dumped a bucket of ice water over her dreams. It was just his style, turning even a divorce into some kind of sick game.

The clerk looked at her apologetically. “Ma’am, we can’t process anything without all your paperwork. Please come back tomorrow when you have it.”

Camilla stumbled outside, feeling like she was in a fog. Anger swirled inside her, making her dizzy and disoriented.

Davina, though, was even more upset. She grabbed Barnard’s wrist, her voice shaky. “Barnard, just be honest with me. You don’t really want a divorce, do you? We had plenty of time. Why didn’t you say something sooner? What are you planning? Didn’t you promise to marry me?”

Her high-pitched wail grated on Barnard’s nerves. He rubbed his temples. “Seriously? You want to do this in public? Do you need the paparazzi to catch us all over again?”

Davina bit her lip, keeping her voice down, but she couldn’t let it go. “Then why didn’t you just say you forgot your ID? You…”

Her words faded as Barnard shot her a cold, unreadable look. Something in his eyes made Davina shrink back, suddenly quiet and uneasy.

Camilla waited for their drama to end before she spoke. “Barnard, enough with these childish tricks. If you keep stalling, I won’t hesitate to take The Carter Group to court again.”
