Ever since it became about her, nothing felt the same anymore.
Camilla knitted her brows, a worried look flickering in her eyes. She knew most of Barnard’s friends. Almost all of them had settled in Cabinda, busy making a name for themselves. Now, hearing that he was throwing a welcome dinner—especially at a time when someone important was returning to the country—it made her uneasy. A single name rose in her mind, clear as day.
She hadn’t even made it to Laguna Shores to hunt him down before her phone rang. It was Ada, and her voice was practically shaking with urgency. “Camilla, can you come back right now? Some of our partners are here. They’re threatening to pull out. We checked, and it looks like it has something to do with The Gates Group.”
Exactly as she feared.
Her suspicions felt painfully confirmed. Ada sounded on the verge of tears, so Camilla had no choice but to give up on her plan to find Barnard for now.
Davina stood nearby and had caught bits of the conversation. As soon as she saw Camilla preparing to leave, she rushed over, trying to block her path. “Wait, weren’t you supposed to get divorced today? Don’t tell me you changed your mind again.”
“My company needs me. This is urgent. I still plan to divorce him, trust me. You can relax. I have absolutely no interest in Barnard,” Camilla said.
Davina started to argue, but Camilla had already brushed her off and hurried to her car.
The office was a mess when she arrived, packed with anxious partners. Ada, Bonnie, and the rest of the team were hoarse from trying to calm everyone down. When they spotted Camilla, relief washed over their faces as if they’d seen a miracle.
She quickly got caught up. Apparently, Pamela—the Gates Group heiress—had landed back in the country last night. From early that morning, their business partners began dropping by, one after another, all with the same excuse: they’d found a better deal elsewhere.
Ada had looked into it and discovered that Pamela was stirring things up. After returning, she’d loudly announced her new studio, backed by the deep pockets of The Gates Group. For many smaller partners, the risk was clear. Why stick with a little firm like Camilla’s when Pamela’s new venture could be their bridge to something bigger? It wasn’t long before minor partners started abandoning ship for a shot at The Gates Group’s clout.
Some were so desperate to leave, they were willing to pay penalty fees just to cut ties.
“Ada, what do we even do? Most people just follow the crowd. If this keeps up, we’ll lose every single partner,” Ada said, anxiety thick in her voice.
“I’ll talk to them myself,” Camilla said. She headed straight for the meeting room.
It took two hours of tense talks, but Camilla managed to put out the immediate fire and kept the most vocal partners from leaving, at least for now. Whether they’d stay for good, though, depended on how much more goodwill the company could show.
Even after the drama, Camilla’s mind wouldn’t settle. Another problem gnawed at her.
