“I know Pamela’s been giving you a hard time again. If you just say the word and come with me to cancel that divorce, I promise I’ll get Pamela to back off. No one will ever find out about what happened before. What do you say?”
He finally laid out exactly what Camilla had expected. Every move, every bit of manipulation, it was all him. Pamela’s return was his arrangement. All those big threats he had lined up, just waiting to crush her. He just hadn’t expected her to see that file so soon, rushing over to threaten her before he’d even finished building his case.
Camilla clapped her hands, eyes full of cold amusement. “You thought this through, didn’t you, Barnard? Thing is, you don’t seem half as confident as you pretend to be. Otherwise, why would you show up the minute you heard I’d been to Saddlebrook Estates, practically sniffing around like a stray who caught a whiff of something? Let’s be real… all of this is just you talking. You don’t have any actual proof about that night, do you?”
Frustration flickered across Barnard’s face.
He said, “Camilla, whether I have proof or not, that’s a risk you can’t afford to take. I know you’ve got Abelard to rely on now, and with him, Pamela is just a small obstacle. Abelard’s got Lance in his corner too, and Pamela’s little tricks? Lance could make those disappear without a thought. But all that only holds if there’s no scandal. Tell me, if everything I just said got out, would the Lane family still let Abelard see you? Would Lance really dive into that mess for him? If they both step back, how long can your BLC survive? Camilla, you really want to see everything you’ve worked for just fall apart? Think about what you stand to lose. Think about the people who care about you. About the company. Are you really ready to gamble it all?”
His words were so sharp, they practically stung. But Camilla had played out Barnard’s threats again and again in her mind. And still, hearing him say it out loud, she could feel disgust swirling inside her.
When Barnard noticed how much she was hurting, he got bolder, his voice softer but so condescending. “Camilla, I just want to bring you home. If you come with me, none of this will ever happen. Can’t you just be good for once?”
He looked at her with that arrogant, savior-like gaze, waiting for her to give in.
