Divorced the Cheat Married the Fleet (Camilla and Lance) novel Chapter 266

Calvin’s face tightened, clearly remembering the uproar their engagement photos had caused. He shot Davina a warning look and didn’t bother sugarcoating it. “You’re staying out of this. Barnard’s mother will take care of everything. All you need to do is show up and pick out a dress.”

He paused, then shook his head. “Actually, don’t even worry about the dress. I’ll have someone bring it to you.”

This wedding meant inviting a lot of important guests. If he left things up to Davina, she’d probably turn their lavish celebration into some small-town banquet. The idea of facing his friends after that made him cringe.

Davina’s enthusiasm faded fast. “Dad, I just…”

“This is final. What you need to do right now is take care of yourself. When you stand next to Barnard, I don’t want people asking if you’re from a different generation.”

The words hit hard. Davina’s face went pale. She lowered her voice and tried to argue, “Dad, I’m only ten years older than Barnard… It’s just a bit of an age gap, nothing more. We’re hardly from different generations, I mean…”

Calvin looked up at her and didn’t catch the hurt in her eyes. Instead, his gaze landed on the faint lines on her face, and for a second, she looked even older than Laura in his mind.

He had nothing in common with Davina anyway and wasn’t about to stick around longer. He stood and cut her off. “That’s it, stop with all the nonsense. If you actually want to marry Barnard, then just follow instructions and don’t stir up trouble. I’ll be grateful if you keep the Carter family name out of the gossip columns.”

He turned to leave. Barnard suddenly spoke up, “Dad, wait a second. When did I ever say I wanted to get married so soon?”

The truth was, he was starting to realize he wasn’t as sure about Davina as he thought. Camilla was still haunting his thoughts. How could he just go through with a wedding like this, without even knowing his own heart?

Calvin’s eyes narrowed as he looked at Barnard. “After everything you did for this woman, you’re backing out now? Your mother and I finally agreed, and now you’re not satisfied? There’s nothing left to discuss. For now, just go with her to those beauty appointments, buy her some clothes, do whatever you need, but please, get rid of that shabby look. I don’t want her embarrassing the Carter family.”

That was all Calvin had to say. He turned and walked away without another word.

Davina, meanwhile, perked up again after hearing Calvin was paying for everything. She ignored his insults, her eyes lighting up as she leaned over to Barnard. “Barnard, could you talk to your mom for me? I just feel like white camellias are too plain for a wedding. Can’t we use red roses instead? They’re the symbol of love. Everyone notices red roses. They’d make the whole ceremony so much more romantic.”
