Several grainy photos from the hotel came with the story.
That’s when he finally put it all together.
Moments later, Barnard hit refresh on his phone. There it was, a video of his argument with Davina outside the hotel, already making the rounds online.
The Carter family had become public fodder lately, showing up in the news more often than social media stars and influencers. Most people didn’t even blink anymore.
Still, a crowd of curious onlookers was always ready for drama, latching onto the latest scandal with endless commentary.
Calvin was on the line, ranting non-stop. He wanted Barnard back at The Carter Estate right away.
When the call ended and the line went dead, Barnard felt a weird sense of unease, but there was no time to analyze it. He shot Davina a sharp look, then jumped in his car and headed home.
Inside the hotel lobby, Camilla watched his car pull away, a small, mocking smile twisting her lips.
Barnard was persistent, still trying to hold their ancient history over her head. If that’s the game he wanted to play, Camilla was happy to give him trouble of his own.
She’d sort out what really happened those years ago. After that, she’d clear things up with Barnard once and for all.
Carol was by Camilla’s side tonight. The Golden Horizon Enterprises CEO was there too, all thanks to Carol’s connections through her family.
That’s how the timed interview and those news leaks had come together. With all these distractions flying around, Barnard wouldn’t even think to suspect Camilla or have the time to bother with Lean.
It was already one in the morning. Outside, a deep winter chill seeped through the city. Camilla didn’t bother going back to Laguna Shores.
She went straight to the hospital and stayed the night with Elise. By sunrise, she quietly collected hair samples from Lean and Jasper and took them to be tested.
Before any results arrived, Camilla’s phone buzzed with a message from the private detective. A quick half hour later, she parked at the edge of an alley in an old part of town.
The detective sipped coffee at a nearby breakfast joint, waiting.
One of the bodyguards blocked the door as Lean tried to shut it. Camilla brushed past, stepping into the cramped, shabby room. She picked the cleanest chair she could find and sat, her words firm. “You seem to know who I am. I bet we’ve got a lot to say to each other.”
Lean’s face had lost all its color. He glanced nervously between Camilla and her towering bodyguards, then reluctantly walked over, stiff and silent.
Camilla spoke again. “I visited your family in Novaria. They look healthy, doing well. But my research says about six years ago, your father—”
“Stop,” Lean cut in. “Don’t talk about my parents. They know nothing. What I did was my choice. If you have a problem, take it out on me.”
He looked worn out but had striking features beneath the exhaustion. Heavy shadows circled his eyes, his face bristled with stubble. His gaze was wild, his pupils shrinking as fear took over.
“Barnard brought you back from abroad,” Camilla pressed. “Why? Is this about custody of the child? Or is there something else?”
She didn’t wait or play games—she just laid it all out.
Barnard’s only leverage was Jasper. As far as Camilla could tell, if Lean really was the man from that night, then Barnard’s whole plan had to be about the custody fight.
