The second Lance spoke up for Camilla, the whole room went dead quiet.
Sarah’s jaw trembled, and she bit her lip so hard she drew a bit of blood. Still, she managed a weak smile and tried to calm Lance down. “Lance, don’t get worked up. Everyone just doesn’t know the whole story yet. Once everything comes out, the truth will be clear, you’ll see.”
Lance shot her a cold look, letting out a mocking laugh. By then, Camilla had already grabbed her phone and pulled up a photo of a contract, holding it out for everyone to see.
Her voice was clear and steady. “When I divorced Barnard, I had Calvin write this contract. I just wanted to make sure he couldn’t keep bothering me. If anyone takes a look, it’s obvious I wanted nothing more than to leave the Carter family behind. I never tried to cling to them. And that money Sarah was talking about? That’s just what Barnard owed me as compensation, spelled out right here. Everything she accused me of is pure fiction.”
The room was crowded and there was no way everyone would see on her small screen, so Lance motioned for someone to bring in a projector. Soon, the contract took up the big screen, right where Sarah’s photos had been. Every line was crystal clear for everyone to read.
People who’d just been sneering at Camilla traded nervous looks and quickly started backpedaling.
“I can’t believe this is how things really went,” one person mumbled, embarrassed.
“Sorry, Camilla, we were fooled. We shouldn’t have believed her,” another whispered.
“Guess she’s the real victim in all this,” someone said under their breath.
“Seriously. Poor Camilla had to deal with all that for nothing.”
Everyone kept an eye on Lance as they spoke, choosing their words carefully, hoping to settle the anger he’d just shown.
Sarah jumped in too. “See? I said it was all a misunderstanding. Now that we know the truth, let’s just get this troublemaker out, shall we?”
