A million questions flooded Sarah’s mind, but she kept forcing herself to swallow them down.
A cold, heavy feeling settled over her, making her blood feel like it was freezing up inside her veins. Even her throat felt dry and sore, that kind of scratchy ache she couldn't clear away.
She’d always told herself that Camilla only took her shot in the last couple of years. She had no idea that the five-year-old boy actually belonged to Lance.
No, something about that didn’t feel right.
Lance had always been loud and bold, and it was obvious how much he liked Camilla. If the kid was really his, Lance would have made a huge deal about it by now. Why would he keep it a secret for so long?
And why come all the way to the hospital, track down Nichol of all people, and get a paternity test?
Sarah couldn't shake the feeling that something was off.
Unless…
Unless even Lance didn’t know he was the father.
As soon as that idea popped into her head, it just made sense. All at once, her wild thoughts began to settle. She steadied herself, drew a deep breath, and knocked on Nichol’s office door.
Nichol looked up, already looking tired of the interruptions. But Sarah forced a smile and tried to sound as understanding as possible.
“Nichol, I’m sorry. I jumped to conclusions before.”
She let out a little laugh and kept her tone friendly. “Honestly, I just never thought… Lance has stayed so quiet for years, and suddenly it turns out there’s a kid that old? I was shocked, that’s all.”
Her attitude was so sincere it took the edge off Nichol’s annoyance.
“Sarah, you really didn’t have to apologize. As long as we’ve cleared the air, it’s fine,” he said, relaxing a little.
Sarah kept her polite smile. “Yes, you’re right. Nichol, did Lance say anything else to you?
Like, is he planning to bring his son to the Charles Estate soon, to make it official with the family?
It’s not my business, I know, but even though I’m the Charles family’s adopted daughter, I'm still his aunt. I just want to pick out a little something special for Jasper ahead of time.”
She was so warm and thoughtful, you’d never suspect her of having any other motive.
“Lance didn’t mention anything like that,” Nichol replied, “but news this big can’t stay private for long, I bet.”
“I see,” Sarah echoed quietly, her expression turning thoughtful.
