Davina’s eyes were wide with shock as she stared at Barnard. “Barnard, why are you being so mean to me? I was just worried about you.”
“Worried about me? If you really cared about me at all, you wouldn’t have run off and acted on your own like that,” Barnard snapped. His patience was gone. Even when he saw the tears welling up in Davina’s eyes, he didn’t soften at all.
Tears streamed down her face. She tried to help Barnard up, but he shoved her hand away. Her voice grew louder. “This isn’t all my fault. You and Camilla were messy long before I got involved. I was scared, and I just panicked, that’s all. Barnard, don’t you get it? I only acted this way because I care about you. You can’t just blame everything on me.”
Davina didn’t care anymore. She threw her arms around him, clutching his arm tightly.
Barnard had been about to stand, but she pulled him back down. His irritation was written all over his face. “Could you just stop making things so difficult? Camilla and I are already divorced. What could there possibly be between us now? You’re Mrs. Carter. Do you honestly think she could threaten your position? There’s no point in picking fights with her anymore.”
Davina couldn’t accept it. “That’s easy for you to say. How am I supposed to just let it go? Barnard, I’m not stupid. All that money you took from me… it didn’t all go to my family, did it? Did you give some of it to her?”
Barnard’s expression changed for a second. “Davina, I have no idea what you’re talking about. Can you just stop with this? I’m really tired.”
Davina finally blurted out the question that had been eating away at her. “Don’t say that. You’ve been seeing Camilla so much lately. If you didn’t give her money, wouldn’t she have already sued you? That money was mine. How could you just give it to her? Barnard, didn’t you say I was the one you loved most? What’s going on? How could you give my money to Camilla? Give it back, okay?”
She started to panic, her words tumbling out. The thought hit her again—she’d fought with almost everyone in the Blair family to marry Barnard. She’d lost nearly all her ties for him. That money was supposed to keep her safe, but now Barnard had taken it and his attitude was still so vague. Suddenly, she felt desperate to get her money back.
Barnard, who had been snapping back at her, fell silent for a moment.
The quiet made Davina even more nervous. “Barnard, why aren’t you saying anything? Did you give it all to Camilla? Can’t you just give it back to me?”
