Davina looked like she was caught off guard, not sure how to answer Camilla’s question.
Barnard jumped in. “Didn’t Davina already explain? She had no idea. She was tricked too. How long are you going to keep this going? You can’t hold one accident against her and ignore all the good she’s done.”
“I’m not judging her intentions,” Camilla replied, her voice steady. “I just don’t get along with her, and I don’t feel like trying. So, can you please leave?”
She stared at Barnard without a hint of emotion. This was her husband. Even now, with the facts staring him in the face, he still defended someone else right in front of her. He believed Davina’s obvious lie without even asking for proof, and somehow, Camilla was the one who got called unreasonable.
For a moment, Camilla felt completely disconnected. Was this really the Barnard who had once chased her with everything he had? Or maybe… had he ever really loved her at all?
Barnard looked like he wanted to say more, but just then Dahlia called. As expected, the dog Davina brought had distemper. It wasn’t recent either.
Camilla put her phone on speaker, the volume high so Barnard couldn’t miss a word.
Barnard and Davina hadn’t even reacted yet when Jasper broke down crying. “Get out! All of you! Don’t ever come to my house again! I hate you.”
Dahlia had already made it clear when she was at the house earlier—Jasper knew that dog could make Snow sick. From the day Snow arrived, he’d barely had a week of peace. Jasper hadn’t even been able to play with him much before the trips to the vet started, always because of these same people. It was no wonder Jasper couldn’t stand them.
Seeing Davina still wasn’t leaving and seemed ready to keep arguing, Camilla cut in. “I really don’t want to argue right now. If you won’t leave, I won’t hesitate to call the police.”
“Camilla, I…” Davina stammered, still unsure.
Barnard glanced at Camilla’s angry face, then at the sobbing Jasper, and finally said, “Davina, let’s just go.”
“Barnard, I swear I didn’t mean any of this. I never thought the dog would… Camilla must have misunderstood me. I’m sorry, it’s all my fault. I messed everything up again.”
Barnard comforted her right in front of Camilla. “It’s not your fault. Don’t let it get to you. Once Camilla calms down, I’ll talk to her for you.”
Barnard making excuses for Davina was so obvious, anyone could see it. Camilla wasn’t surprised Dahlia picked up on it too. All she could do was smile bitterly. “It doesn’t matter. I’m divorcing him anyway. What happened with the dog? Any chance it’ll recover?”
“It’s not looking good. The vet’s keeping it for now, but even if it gets better, I know you wouldn’t want it back. I told the clinic to find it a new home once it’s healthy,” Dahlia said.
Jasper quickly started asking Dahlia about Snow. The two of them kept chatting, so Camilla called the waiter over and ordered their meal.
After dinner, Dahlia and Camilla went their separate ways. Before heading home with Jasper, Camilla messaged Susan one more time to confirm everything had been disinfected. Only then did she take Jasper home.
The next day, Camilla had just reached her office when Ada, her assistant, came over and whispered, “Camilla, Mrs. Carter is in your office.”
Of course, she was talking about Barnard’s mother, Laura.
