“But it’s okay. I kept telling myself the Charles family already gave me so much. If Lance doesn’t want me around, then I’ll just leave.
I’ve done everything I can. You can’t keep blaming me every time something goes wrong, can you?
If you really think I can’t do anything right, maybe I should just disappear.
Everyone keeps saying I only have what I have thanks to the Charles family. So, if I give my life back, will that finally be enough?”
Sarah suddenly lost it. She rushed across the room, grabbed a fruit knife from the table, and before anyone could react, she dragged it across her wrist. Blood started pouring everywhere.
No one could react fast enough. By the time they realized what was happening, her skin was already cut open and the blood just kept coming.
She didn't hold back at all. Blood ran in rivulets down her arm. Tessa hurried to her, fumbling with tissues and clumsily trying to stop the bleeding, but they turned red in seconds.
Oscar snapped out of his shock and yelled for someone to call an ambulance.
The whole place erupted into chaos. All eyes were on Sarah. Nobody paid Lance any attention anymore.
Sarah slumped against Tessa, pale as a ghost, and still tried to reassure her with a shaky voice. “Tessa, don’t worry about me. I’m not afraid. I owe the Charles family this much. I can pay it back. I just hope… maybe now Lance will stop doubting me.”
“Don’t say that, Sarah, please.” Tessa tried to soothe her. “You’ve always been kind and sweet. You would never do something awful. This is all Lance’s mistake. He’s just upset and pointing fingers without any proof. This isn’t your fault, I know it’s not. Please, don’t talk, just try to hang in there, okay? We’re getting you to the hospital. I promise, I won’t let anyone hurt you again.”
Sarah nodded weakly, her body going limp in Tessa’s arms. The blood from her wrist kept soaking through the wadded-up cloth, leaving Tessa’s hands sticky and red.
The ambulance got there fast. Oscar carefully lifted Sarah and carried her out.
Darwin threw Lance a cold, hard look, then followed everyone else outside and got in the ambulance too.
Suddenly, the huge living room of the Charles Estate felt empty, with only Lance, Camilla, Jasper, and Wallace left behind.
Before, while Tessa was here, Wallace had at least a little spine, willing to argue back. But now, with everyone gone, he shrunk in on himself, trying to pretend he didn’t exist.
