Darwin was so infuriated by the report that he almost burst into a bitter laugh.
Setting aside the fact that the Carter family were utter scum, Sarah had just violently ripped her own mask off in the hospital corridor. She had laid all her toxic malice bare, yet Tessa still couldn't see through her. She was still blindly paving an escape route for the viper she raised.
As for the supposed kidnapping? Darwin didn't buy it for a second. He was absolutely certain Sarah had struck a backroom deal with the Carters and intentionally offered herself up as leverage.
"Where is Sarah now?" Darwin demanded.
"She didn't fly to Valdoria with the Carters," the butler replied. "Tessa bought her a separate ticket to Ostrovia. She's most likely long gone by now."
"Freeze every single Charles family account she has access to. Intercept the funds Tessa transferred and claw that money back immediately. That woman is no longer a part of the Charles family, and she has no right to touch a single dime of our money," Darwin ordered ruthlessly.
The butler bowed and left to execute the commands. Darwin turned his sharp gaze to Camilla. "The Carter family fled to Valdoria. Do you know if they have any hidden connections or operations out there?"
If those rats were going to sever their tails and run, they would naturally choose a turf they were familiar with.
"I've never heard anything about it," Camilla replied. She knew Calvin and Laura had traveled internationally before, but they had never once mentioned any ties to Valdoria.
"Understood. I'll have my people lock down Valdoria. The second those scumbags show their faces, I'll make sure they learn a brutal lesson," Darwin vowed.
Even ignoring all their other sins, the sheer fact that the Carters had mistreated his precious great-grandson was a death sentence. The fact that they had managed to exploit a loophole and scurry off to Valdoria made Darwin feel deeply insulted.
The reality of the Carter family's escape left Camilla feeling slightly unmoored, but she didn't dwell on it for too long.
What she truly never expected was the grave phone call she received the very next morning from Mahoney, asking her to meet him at a private restaurant.
Judging by the heavy, somber tone of his voice, she assumed the Carters had caused more trouble. But the moment Camilla stepped into the private dining room, she realized the situation was infinitely more severe.
Mahoney wasn't alone. Seated around the table were several older, hardened police officers. She recognized their faces instantly—they were her father's old brothers-in-arms, the uncles she had grown up admiring as a little girl.
Over the years, some had retired, and others had transferred to different precincts, yet here they were, entirely reassembled in this small private room.
