"Don't worry, I'm not sad. What do they have to do with me anyway? We're the real family," Lance said.
The dumplings were finished quickly. Because there were so many hands helping out, they came out looking wildly different.
Lance, Susan, and Elise's contributions looked relatively normal. Mixed in were several massive, overstuffed ones made by Darwin, along with Jasper's little misshapen creations.
Seeing the mismatched assortment all clustered together brought a profound sense of warmth to the kitchen.
Knowing how much Tessa despised her, Camilla had stayed out of sight earlier to avoid throwing fuel on the fire. Only now did she come downstairs. She was just about to help Susan boil the water when Lance stepped in her way. "I've got it. You just got back—go sit and chat with Jasper."
Camilla didn't fight him on it. Darwin, however, started teasing him. "Look at you, strutting around like a peacock showing off its feathers. When Camilla wasn't home, you never rushed into the kitchen like that. Tsk, tsk. Lance, can't you play it cool for once? It's almost embarrassing to watch."
"Why should I play it cool? Besides, if I had played it cool, where would you have gotten your granddaughter-in-law and your great-grandson?" Lance countered.
Darwin choked on his words. He shot a subtle glance toward Jasper, deciding not to take the bait. Instead, he turned to Camilla. "Camilla, come spend the holidays with me at the Charles Estate this year. The elders of the family will all be there, making it the perfect time to set a wedding date for you and Lance."
"A wedding date?" Camilla was completely thrown off by Darwin's urgency. She and Lance had barely made their relationship official a few days ago. How did they jump straight to picking a wedding date?
And didn't Darwin hate her guts?
This attitude shift was giving her whiplash.
"Of course," Darwin said smoothly. "Lance has already decided on you, and the two of you get along beautifully. The next logical step is setting a date, isn't it?
Carney is coming back this year too. We'll just have him pick an auspicious day for the two of you and get this major milestone locked down."
As he spoke, Darwin's peripheral vision discretely flicked back to Jasper.
He and Jasper had been getting along famously lately.
But it had also sparked Lance's suspicions.
Lance held grudges like a professional. If he found out Darwin had secretly known the truth about Jasper's parentage all along and had hidden it just to score points with the kid, Lance would probably pack up and hide Jasper away completely.
Darwin had been sweating bullets lately, knowing he couldn't keep Lance in the dark forever.
Only by getting Camilla and Lance married as quickly as possible could his heart finally rest easy.
Plus, he was dying to officially change Jasper's last name.
