When Davina's eyes met Barnard's furious glare, a flicker of panic crossed her face, but she quickly doubled down, wailing for the cameras. "My life is so miserable! Barnard, you promised you loved me the most! How could you change your mind so fast?! I left my hometown and gave up everything to follow you here! And for what?! It's all because of this woman! She seduced you, didn't she?! I'm exposing her today! I want everyone to see her true colors!"
The chaotic noise made Barnard's head pound. "I already made our relationship crystal clear to you. What kind of stunt are you pulling now?"
"Barnard, I am your wife! When we got married, it was front-page news back in Cabinda! Now you're trying to cut me off just for this woman? It's not fair! Look, everyone! These are our engagement photos! And photos from our wedding! I am his wife, and he's tossing me aside for another woman! I demand justice!"
She had thought long and hard after leaving his office. Barnard promised her money as long as she stayed out of his way, but he refused to give her a legitimate title. If he ever managed to win Camilla back and bring her home, Camilla could kick her out onto the streets, and she would have no legal recourse.
Her only move was to blow the scandal wide open and force his hand. She knew how much upper-class men cared about their public image. To save face, Barnard would be forced to acknowledge her, just like his father had done. It would enrage him, but she had no other choice. If she proved she was his wife in front of the media, he wouldn't be able to easily dump her.
"Mr. Carter, are the allegations true?"
"Mr. Carter, are you abandoning the woman who stayed with you through your lowest points now that you've struck it rich?"
"Mr. Carter, don't you have a guilty conscience?"
The reporters swarmed, forming a tight circle around him. Bound to his wheelchair, Barnard was completely trapped. Davina's theatrical weeping rang in his ears, stripping away whatever microscopic shred of sympathy he had left for her. All he felt now was utter repulsion.
As the aggressive questions continued, Barnard finally snapped. "Have you lost your mind?! Are you ever going to tell them the truth?!"
Davina froze, her fake tears stalling.
