"Mr. Lennox, if you truly didn't know anything, why did you sneak away behind Barnard's back? You were Clement's confidant, yet you're scraping by under Barnard because you're holding onto a secret he wants. You're afraid to tell him the truth, terrified he'll get rid of you once you outlive your usefulness. At the same time, this secret is a ticking time bomb keeping you awake at night. Am I wrong?" Lance cleared his throat. He crossed his arms, his posture entirely relaxed as he stared the man down.
Zack Lennox met Lance's piercing gaze and found himself completely unable to argue back.
He really was caught between a rock and a hard place. Terrified that Barnard would dispose of him, he had clung to that secret like a lifeline. Yet the moment any trace of that secret came to light, it would spell his death anyway.
Zack was already on the verge of a mental breakdown. Now that Mike suspected him too, his only thought had been to find a quick way to clean up the mess. He never expected Camilla and Lance to corner him before he could even put his plan into motion.
"Don't even think about finding a chance to cover your tracks. Mike is already onto you. Do you honestly believe anything you do can slip past him? Mr. Lennox, you aren't the mastermind behind this. If you come clean right now, you might still have a way out. Are you really going to stay this stubborn?" Camilla demanded.
It was glaringly obvious that Zack knew the inside story. Sensing that she was inches away from finally getting news about her father, Camilla couldn't stop her body from trembling. A cold sweat dampened her back as an overwhelming wave of dread and anxiety washed over her.
Noticing her distress, Lance reached out and firmly grasped her hand, grounding her enough to steady her turbulent emotions.
Zack's expression shifted rapidly. He seemed to be hesitating, calculating his odds. After a long silence, he finally spoke. "I can tell you, but you have to bring the police. I'll take you there, but only with the cops."
The situation at that place was simply too horrific.
Zack knew the man was Camilla's father. He was terrified that the moment she saw the truth, the shock would drive her to kill him on the spot. He needed the police there for protection. If anything happened, he could at least claim he surrendered voluntarily.
When Clement fled, he had dumped the weight of his greatest secret onto Zack's shoulders. Zack was a follower by nature, and he had long since buckled under the pressure.
With absolutely nowhere left to hide, Zack finally caved.
He didn't trust Camilla, going so far as to call the police himself.
Within twenty minutes, Chief Mahoney arrived with several Valdoria police officers. Carol happened to be in Valdoria at the time, so she tagged along with them.
Knowing they were about to get answers about Tanner White, Carol could barely contain her excitement.
Zack, on the other hand, looked incredibly shifty. His expression remained unnerving for the entire ride, but since he was already in the police cruiser, there was no turning back. He braced himself and gave the directions.
